Job summary

Granite School District is seeking a Behavior Support Technician (BST) in the Special Education department. The BST will work under behavior specialists to assist students with severe behavior challenges, collect data, draft behavior interventions, and train paraeducators to sustain progress.

Required: High School diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license, ability to travel between schools, and the intention to obtain an RBT certification within 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Independent transportation to travel to various schools.
  • Must obtain RBT certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Experience with students who have behavior challenges preferred.

Job Summary

The Behavior Support Technician (BST) supportsstudents with the most severe behavior challenges in the district. The BSTworks under the immediate supervision of behavior specialists. The BSTintervenes directly with students with severe behavior challenges, collects, manages, and interprets data on student behavior, drafts behavior interventions/plans including environmental engineering, and trains school-based paraeducators to replicate duties after students are maintaining stable behavior.

Essential Functions
  • Implements behavior strategies and/or provides one-to-one or small group instruction to students with challenging behaviors (i.e., physical aggression, self-harm, elopement, destruction of property, other dangerous behavior).
  • Delivers direct instruction to students in the special education and general education settings.
  • Collects data on behavior and/or academic target(s).
  • Trains and supports school-based paraeducators in the schools.
  • Provides emergency support to students in crisis.
  • Participate in regular professional development and embedded training including MANDT training
  • Required to attend regularly scheduled training sessions held by district supervisors (several trainings monthly)
  • Must implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational settings
  • Must be able to work flexible hours based on student needs
  • May be required to ride the school bus to and from school with student(s)
  • Must have transportation to travel independently to various schools

Required Education and Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent

Valid driver's license

Independent transportation to travel to various schools

Required Prior Experience

Previous work with students with behavior challenges preferred.

Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Must currently hold or will acquire a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BCBA) within 6 months of hire (or notification of this requirement for current BSTs)
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Adhere to RBT credential requirements in addition to district directed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
  • Must be able to learn, describe and apply a variety of learned behavior support and management techniques based on applied behavior analysis (proactive behavior, de‑
  • Must be able to apply acquired knowledge and skills consistently and with fidelity
  • Must be able to follow directives from specialists/administrators
  • Must demonstrate regular positive interactions with students and school staff under all circumstances
  • Must implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational setting
Assigned Decision Making

Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish assigned tasks. Must take directions well and be able to work within specific guidelines. Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions. Concerns for safety of self and others.

Interactions with Others

Positive interaction of students, special education teachers, teachers, administrators, support staff and supervisors.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervision of students if required to ride the bus with students.

Working Environment

Work setting is mainly in the classroom setting. May be asked to work inside and outside the building to accomplish assigned tasks. Working conditions can be in hot and cold weather. May experience stress from disruptive students and/or groups of students.

  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
