Behavior Specialist

The behavior Specialist is an experienced special educator skilled in the provision of training and technical support to school personnel who are charged with the implementation of special education services to students with behavior challenges. The Behavior Specialist will demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the area of emotional disabilities, autism and other mental health challenges.

Qualifications

The Behavior Specialist will be licensed and experienced as a provider to special education services in the state of Indiana (i.e., Teacher, SLP, School Psychologist). The Behavior Specialist will have knowledge in the provision of services for students with behavior challenges.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Develop and provide trainings to HSE special education staff, general education staff, administration, families and community in the area of behavior disorders.
  • Develop a plan for a specific student whose behavior impedes the learning of self and/or the learning of others.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop hypothesis, strategies and implement a plan including establishing effective reinforcers, necessary environmental supports, methods of data collection, timelines for data collection, and analysis of the data.
  • Model interventions that have been developed by the students’ educational team.
  • Provide documentation systems for classroom staff that includes reports, data sheets, and any additional pertinent information.
In relation to Students
  • Conduct intensive behavioral analysis in a variety of settings.
  • Review appropriate student records and assist in developing appropriate behavioral strategies.
  • Assist in developing appropriate instructional strategies.
  • Observe measures of confidentiality.
  • Participate in case conferences.
In relation to Staff
  • Develop positive relationships with staff.
  • Model/train staff in behavioral and instructional strategies specific to student needs.
  • Maintain scheduled consultation with general and special education teachers.
  • Act as a consultant in the educational setting to promote enhanced access or benefit of services.
  • Work cooperatively with related service personnel and staff development department.
In relation to Administration
  • Follow policies and procedures of HSE Schools.
  • Attend required meetings and school related activities.
  • Keep Director of Exceptional Learners informed of schedule, as well as any problems, difficulties, etc. that arise in districts.
In relation to Families and Community
  • Establish an effective family/community communication system.
  • Assist families in locating and securing community resources.
  • Assist families in accessing local, state or federal funding resources.
  • Keep families apprised of local or state training opportunities, etc.
Personal and Professional Responsibilities
  • Nurture a positive relationship with super-ordinates, subordinates and peers.
  • Demonstrate respect for super-ordinates, subordinates and peers.
  • Support corporation decisions and direction relative to matters of policy and administrative directives. Work as a team player.
  • Demonstrate ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner.
  • Address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.
