Job summary

UL Solutions Auburn Hills laboratory seeks an engineer to program and validate battery test sequences, develop MORPHEE scripts, and manage CAN communication with BMS and devices under test.

Responsibilities include configuring CAN databases, analyzing CAN traffic, documenting procedures, and integrating test hardware such as battery cyclers, power supplies, DAQ systems, and environmental chambers for reliable, compliant testing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Mechatronics, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience integrating and controlling laboratory hardware such as battery cyclers, power supplies, DAQ systems, and environmental chambers.
  • Experience with the MORPHEE test automation platform.
  • Familiarity with CAN communication in laboratory test environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support programming and execution of battery test sequences while developing MORPHEE scripts and contributing to control logic for test flow, fault handling, interlocks, and emergency shutdowns.
  • Support CAN-based communication between test equipment, BMS, and devices under test.
  • Configure and manage CAN databases (DBC files), signal mapping, message decoding, and diagnostics within MORPHEE.
  • Analyze CAN traffic and test data to identify communication issues, test failures, or abnormal battery behavior.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software, hardware, and CAN network issues affecting test reliability and accuracy.
  • Monitor, acquire, log, and validate electrical, thermal, and communication data during battery testing.
  • Generate automated test reports, data summaries, and traceability records.
  • Document test software, CAN configurations, test procedures, and system architectures.
  • Support commissioning, validation, and continuous improvement of battery laboratory test equipment.
  • Integrate laboratory hardware including battery cyclers, power supplies, loads, DAQ systems, environmental chambers, and safety systems.
  • Collaborate with Lab Engineers, and lab technicians to define test requirements and support test execution.

Job description

Programs test equipment to meet custom testing requirements.

This is an onsite role requiring 5 days per week in Auburn Hills.

Responsibilities
  • Read and understand data sheets and test plans.
  • Support programming and execution of battery test sequences while developing basic MORPHEE scripts and contributing to control logic for test flow, fault handling, interlocks, and emergency shutdowns.
  • Support CAN‑based communication between test equipment, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and devices under test.

Qualifications
  • Generally 2 Years or more of related experience or demonstrated competency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Mechatronics, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience integrating and controlling laboratory hardware such as battery cyclers, power supplies, electronic loads, DAQ systems, and environmental chambers.
  • Experience with the MORPHEE test automation platform.
  • Keysight ESD programming experience.
  • Familiarity with C++, Python, Matlab, and/or LabVIEW.
  • Experience programming automated laboratory test equipment for battery or energy systems, including programming to limits.
  • Working knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) communication.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Familiar in analog signals, PLC, and control cabinet architecture.

What we offer:

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimatedsalary range for this position is $64,300-85,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors.This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
