Job summary

Step Up Louisiana in Louisiana is seeking a Canvasser to engage communities through door-to-door canvassing and phone outreach, helping to build a progressive base and support education and climate justice campaigns.

Work hours are 22 hours per week, in-person in NOLA, Jefferson Parish or Baton Rouge, Monday–Friday with some weekend hours. Pay is $18.75/hour plus a $10 gas stipend per driving shift; driving while meeting safety and insurance requirements is required.

Location: In-Person in either NOLA, Jefferson Parish or Baton Rouge

Step Up Louisiana, along with our sister organization Step Up for Action, is a community-based organization committed to building power to win education and climate justice for all. We work with multiracial and inter-generational Louisianans to “Step Up” by campaigning, organizing from a racial justice perspective, and holding public officials accountable. We organize with parents, workers, students, and community members to disrupt systemic oppression in our schools and workplaces through voter education, advocacy, and action.

About the Position:

Canvassers support our organization in getting our message out using door-to-door conversations, building our base, and winning progressive change. This position is ideal for an outgoing person who likes walking and having conversations about elections, public health issues, and social justice issues like climate, community, and schools. Drivers are expected to Ride-Share Members/Fellow Canvassers. For safety reasons, the Canvass team uses a buddy system and will pair or group Canvassers to work collectively. Canvassers use their personal vehicle to transport fellow canvassers and may transport members in our community organizing efforts. Safe driving practices and maintaining appropriate automobile insurance are essential requirements of this position.

Work Hours:

Monday, Wednesday & Friday 2pm to 6pm, Tuesday & Thursday 2pm - 7pm with phone banking on Tuesday and Thursday where your hours will be extended till 7pm to notify members of Chapter meetings, events or to set up 1on 1 with leadership. Saturday hours vary (i.e. Election Season or Special events)

• Reliable and able to work a set schedule, including evenings and Saturdays
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to upholding progressive values and passion for social justice
• Ability to use tablet seamlessly to sign people up for membership
• Ability to read and interpret scripts and change scripts regularly and easily
• Reliable insured transportation, a valid Driver’s License and the ability and willingness to drive for work
