Job summary

The Central Lincoln County YMCA is seeking a Basketball Programs Instructor to lead youth classes and clinics, and promote healthy living and social responsibility within our community in Maine.

Ideal candidates have 3–5 years of related experience, CPR and First Aid certification within 60 days of hire, and strong interpersonal skills. A High School diploma or GED is required, with dependable computer skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Position Summary:

This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit to strengthen the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teaches basketball classes and clinics on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons: Basketball Skills Clinic (elementary), Itty Bitty Basketball (Pre-K & K), and Basketball Tots (ages 2-3 with parent) starting in November. Additional programs and classes are possible.
  • Works closely with the Program & Summer Camp Director to promote healthy living, social responsibility, and youth development.
  • Works closely with the Program & Summer Camp Director to create and execute basketball programs and/or curriculum for the advancement of the YMCA while ensuring safety, licensing standards, and the YMCA's reputation and providing the highest level of customer service.
  • Collaborates with other staff and leads in preparation, setup, and delivery of quality programming and activities in a structured, positive environment.
  • Supervises and actively engages basketball program participants during class, manages group dynamics to minimize disruptive behavior, and fosters positive social skills.
  • Prepares adequately for basketball program by setting up equipment in advance and ensures equipment is clean, sanitized and functioning properly.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with staff, participants, and community partners and connects them to the YMCA.
  • Promotes YMCA programs and services to existing and potential members and recruits new participants.
  • Recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers to ensure quality instruction and adherence to YMCA standards.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment and keeps areas organized. Assists with cleaning as needed to assure children and families are entering a welcoming environment.
  • Creates a safe, and welcoming environment where participants can build confidence, teamwork, independence, and problem-solving skills.
  • As a Mandated Reporter, recognizes signs of abuse or neglect and reports to supervisor and the appropriate authorities.
  • Provides administrative support as needed and maintains accurate attendance records. Document all incidents and accidents in appropriate locations.

  • Work is performed at a community campus that serves all people.

  • The campus facility is open early mornings, evenings, and weekends and the job may require attendance outside of regular business hours (9am – 5pm).
  • The noise level can be all volumes.
