Job summary

The YMCA of Greater New York is seeking a part-time Basketball Instructor at the Dodge YMCA in Brooklyn, NY. You will work with children/teens to promote basketball enjoyment, boost physical skills, and build confidence through progressive lessons.

Responsibilities include lesson planning, supervision, safety checks, and parent communication. Must have coaching experience and relevant certifications, plus completion of YMCA Training and HEADS UP certificate within set timelines.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum of one year of experience teaching basketball to children/teens in a structured setting.
• Knowledge of youth development stages.
• Content expert in designated sports activity.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
• Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
• Must complete YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of employment.
• Must obtain CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Develop program objectives and goals for each session with the supervisor.
• Create age-appropriate, progressive lesson plans for each session.
• Supervise participants according to YMCA standards and guidelines.
• Modify lesson plans to meet participant needs.
• Encourage teamwork and sportsmanship.
• Teach basic rules and skills and promote safety.
• Communicate progress to parents/guardians and about next sessions.
• Coordinate program promotion and recruit participants, when needed.
• Provide direction to volunteers or assistants when applicable.
• Be familiar with branch emergency procedures and act accordingly in emergencies.
• Ensure cleanliness of the program space during activities.
• Inform the Manager on Duty about incident reports.
• Attend meetings, trainings, and special events as required.

The Dodge YMCA is seeking a Basketball Instructor who will be responsible for working with children/teens to promote the enjoyment of basketball activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. The overall major functions of the Basketball Instructor also include:

• Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
• Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.

• Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
• Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
• Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (e.g., ratio, attendance, etc.).
• Be able to modify lesson plans and instructions to meet the needs of the participants.
• Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
• Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session.
• Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen.
• Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.
• Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
• When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants who support the program.
• Have a thorough understanding of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions in emergencies.
• Ensure the cleanliness of the program space during all activities.
• Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
• Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.

Desired Skills & Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching children/teens basketball in a structured setting.
• Knowledge of youth development stages.
• Content expert in designated sports activity.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
• Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
• Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of employment.
• Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of employment.
