Job summary

Boone County Schools is seeking a dedicated athletic coach to lead sport-specific skill development and the safe, positive growth of student-athletes. You will plan practices, coordinate with the athletic director and Principal, and help schedule contests while managing equipment and budgets.

Qualifying candidates hold Kentucky teaching or substitute certificates, or meet alternative credential requirements, with CPR/First Aid and sports-safety coursework completed.

Qualifications

• Must hold a Kentucky teaching certificate, or an Emergency Certificate for Substitute Teaching.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher, or 64 semester hours and be 21 years of age.
• High school diploma with KHSAA-specified electives, 21+ years old.
• CPR/First Aid with AED training from an approved program.
• Completed the Sports Safety Course per KRS 160.445.
• Prior coaching experience or demonstrated knowledge in the sport.
• Ability to work well with students and communicate with students, faculty, parents, and the community.

Responsibilities

• Coach participants in skills for the sport to achieve high-level performance.
• Plan and schedule regular practices with the athletic director and Principal approval.
• Assist in scheduling interscholastic contests for the sport.
• Prepare bids and recommend athletic equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
• Maintain attendance and insurance records as required by the athletic director.
• Oversee safety conditions of the facility during activity times.
• Enforce eligibility criteria and sportsmanlike behavior for participants.
• Develop annual budget requests and manage the budget for the sport.
• Evaluate assistant coaches and report findings to the Principal and athletic director.
• Participate in duties described in the regular teacher job description.
• Ensure proper maintenance and care of athletic equipment and schedules.
• Submit purchase orders for review and approval by the athletic director.
• Obtain principal approval for all fundraising activities.
• Monitor student fundraising related to drama and ensure supervision by certified staff.
• Maintain supervision of students by certified personnel after school as required.
• Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor; note that summer practices apply to certain sports.

Job description

• Holds a valid Kentucky teaching certificate; or


• Holds a valid Emergency Certificate for Substitute Teaching under the qualifications outlined in 16 KAR 2:120 Sec. 2 (7)(b); or


• Holds a Bachelor’s degree or higher; or


• Have a minimum of 64 semester hours and be 21 years of age; or


• Have a high school diploma (or its equivalent), be age 21 or over and completed all KHSAA Board of Control prescribed electives outlined in KHSAA Bylaw 25


• Have current certification of C.P.R. course including Adult and Child certifications, the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator and the requisite First Aid Training, conducted by an instructor or program approved by a college or university, the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other bona fide accrediting agency that is approved by the KHSAA based upon industry standards


• Have successfully completed the Sports Safety Course as outlined in KRS 160.445


• Has prior coaching experience or exhibits evidence of knowledge in the sport assigned


• Has the ability to work well with students


• Has the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, parents, and the community

JOB GOAL

To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved


• Plan and schedule with the athletic director (with approval of the Principal) a regular program of practice for each season including summer practices and camps


• Assist the athletic director in scheduling all interscholastic contests in the sport involved


• Prepare bids and recommend purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as appropriate


• Maintain necessary attendance forms, insurance records and similar paperwork, as specified by the athletic director


• Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present


• Enforce the established performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in the assigned sport


• Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times and establish and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual pupils


• Develop an annual-budget request for the sport, in cooperation with the principal and athletic director and administer the annual budget for the sport according to established policies and procedures


• Evaluate all assistant coaches who are responsible to him/her and make recommendation to the principal and the athletic director


• Participate in those functions and activities as described in the regular teacher job description


• Oversee the proper maintenance and care of athletic equipment


• Maintain file of practice schedules to document the teacher of proper skills/knowledge


• Submit purchase orders to athletic director for review and approval


• Obtain advanced approval from the principal for all fund raising activities


• Monitor and be responsible for all student fund raising activities related to the drama program


• Have all students under supervision of certified personnel at all times at approved after school programs


• Perform other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the supervisor


• Summer practices and camps are only applicable to certain sports
