Job description

Description

The Basic Sciences Division of Fred Hutch Cancer Center seeks a visionary scientific leader to accelerate discoveries in fundamental biology that can transform our understanding of normal cellular function and the disruptions that underlie cancer and other diseases.

This Basic Sciences Division position will be for faculty pursuing fundamental, mechanistic questions broadly relevant to one or more of the following scientific priority areas: Immunotherapy, Precision Oncology, Data Science, or Viruses and Vaccines. We interpret these areas broadly and welcome applicants whose fundamental research connects to them in any way. This position will include generous startup funds, an endowed chair, funding for internal and external collaborations, and resources to support an additional, separate faculty recruitment for the Division.

This search is directed toward Associate and Full Professors, or equivalent ranks. Appointment will be made at the rank of full‑time Associate or Full Professor, with primary appointment in the Basic Sciences Division at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. An adjunct appointment may be considered, if appropriate, with other Divisions at Fred Hutch and at a department at the University of Washington.

Founded in 1981, the Basic Sciences Division has continually evolved to be at the forefront of discovery, seeking to understand the fundamental underpinnings of biology as well as the dysregulations that cause disease. Our faculty pursue structural, genetic, molecular, cellular, developmental, infectious disease, and evolutionary biology using a broad range of experimental and computational approaches. We believe an inclusive, collaborative, egalitarian, and creative environment provides the basis for scientific innovation and world-changing discoveries. We are looking for a colleague who shares our commitment to fundamental, curiosity-driven research and the freedom to follow where the science leads.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit cancer treatment and research center based in Seattle. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites and is the only National Cancer Institute‑designated cancer center in Washington. With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID 19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers.

Seattle is one of the country's most exciting and vibrant hubs for cutting-edge, world‑class science. Seattle is home to a dense cluster of research powerhouses, including the University of Washington, the Allen Institute, the Institute for Systems Biology, the Seattle Children's Research Institute, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Benaroya Institute, as well as a thriving biotech sector. Basic Sciences faculty routinely collaborate across these institutions, and the city's concentration of talent creates a uniquely rich, fast‑moving scientific community in which to build a research program.

Faculty are expected to perform their primary activities on‑site at Fred Hutch.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities makes us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

Applications received by December 31st, 2026 will be guaranteed consideration. Applications received after that date may be considered on a rolling basis as long as the position remains open.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $210,413 to $300,000 for faculty hired at the Associate Professor rank and from $239,714 to $450,000 for faculty hired at the Full Professor rank.

Pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Pay for Faculty positions is based on a variety of factors, including degree, specialty, clinical practice and experience. Faculty without credited time in rank will generally start at the entry rate for their relevant specialty and rank. This position is eligible for relocation assistance and sign‑on bonus. Other compensation associated with this position may include an Administrative Supplement (ADS) in addition to base pay.

Fred Hutch Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well‑being, and financial security. Benefits include medical/vision, dental, flexible spending accounts, life, disability, retirement, family life support, employee assistance program, onsite health clinic, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation (22 days per year), paid sick leave (up to 30 calendar days per occurrence of a qualifying reason), paid holidays (up to 13 days per year), paid parental leave (up to 4 weeks), and partially paid sabbatical leave (up to 12 months).

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H‑1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H‑1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD (or foreign equivalent). They must have experience as an independent research investigator (lab-based or office-based), as well as expertise and interest in scientific areas relevant to the mission of the Basic Sciences Division and Fred Hutch. The candidate should have a demonstrated track record in obtaining funding and leading an innovative research group.
