Job summary

The Prospect Park YMCA in New York is seeking a Baseball Sports Instructor to work with children and teens, promoting enjoyment of sports while developing physical competence, confidence, and basic baseball skills.

You will create progressive lesson plans, supervise participants, communicate with parents, ensure safety, and coordinate with the supervisor on objectives; YMCA coaching trainings and certifications required within specified timeframes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.
  • Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
  • Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop program objectives and goals for each session.
  • Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
  • Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines.
  • Modify lesson plans and instructions to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding progress and registration for the next session.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities for their child/teen.
  • Ensure equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition with monthly safety checks.
  • Lead program promotion and recruitment efforts with Supervisor.
  • Direct volunteers or Sports Assistants when applicable.
  • Understand branch emergency procedures and act appropriately in emergencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the program space during activities.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty about incident reports.
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and special events.

Job Description
Salary: $20.00 - $30.00 Hourly

The Prospect Park YMCA is seeking a Baseball Sports Instructor who will be responsible for working with children/teens to promote the enjoyment of sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. The overall major functions of the Sports Instructor also include:

  • Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
  • Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.
  • Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
  • Encourage a lifetime participation in sports and physical activity.
  • Embody the YMCA Core Values.

Essential Functions
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
  • Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
  • Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (e.g., ratio, attendance, etc.).
  • Be able to modify lesson plans and instructions to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen.
  • Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants who support the program.
  • Have a thorough understanding of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions in emergencies.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the program space during all activities.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.
