Job Description
Athletic Coach
Reports To: Head coach and athletic director, in conjunction with the middle school principal.
Supervises: Coaching staff of middle school coaches, as guided by the athletic director and principal.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (preferred).
- Substantial knowledge of technical aspects of baseball, while continuously studying new theories and procedures.
- Serves as a role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
General
- Understanding that athletic programs influence community image; maintaining sportsmanship and student mental health.
- Awareness of extended time, injury risk, and due‑process considerations.
- Assume common sense and good judgment when responsibilities are not explicitly detailed; yearly evaluation and possible renewal.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Thorough knowledge of athletic policies approved by the board of education and responsible for implementation.
- Knowledge of state and league regulations; consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.
- Understand proper administrative chain of command and refer requests or grievances through proper channels; attend required meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
- Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for assistants; design conferences, clinics, and meetings to promote program awareness.
- Train and inform staff; encourage professional growth through clinic attendance.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness, and evaluate assistants at season's end.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
- Ensure safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment.
- Advise head coach and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
- Mentor athletes, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athlete grades and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
- Communicate training rules, schedules, calendars, and sport regulations to athletes and parents.
- Follow injury, medical, and emergency policies.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Assist athletes in college or advanced education selection.
Finance, Facility and Equipment
- Accountable for all equipment.
- Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize access.
- Ensure athletes are in authorized areas at appropriate times.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games; ensure cleanliness and maintenance of sport‑specific facilities.
- Teach players respect for equipment and school property.
Public Relations
- Promote the sport within the school via recruitment and external outreach through media, little league programs, or other avenues.
- Maintain good public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
