Job Summary
The Bartender offers, prepares, and serves beverages and food to members and guests. The bartender will greet members, learn about their preferences, answer questions, recommend menu items, and provide an exceptional dining experience. The bartender is required to be knowledgeable in mixology and service, have a positive and engaging personality, keep a professional appearance and performance. This role is critical to maintaining the luxury standard and reputation of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa while upholding the highest levels of discretion and professionalism.
Essential Job Functions
- Greets and welcomes members and guests.
- Reads and listens to determine beverage preferences, makes recommendations and takes drink orders.
- Informs members about new beverage additions and specials.
- Selects and mixes ingredients, garnishes glasses, and serves beverages under standard recipes.
- Follows the state of Texas laws regarding guidelines and requirements for serving alcohol.
- Takes inventory and orders supplies to ensure the bar is well stocked.
- Adheres to proper alcohol handling, sanitation, and safety procedures. Maintains appropriate dating, labeling, and rotation of all beverage items.
- Develops new cocktail recipes.
- Processes orders, payments, and charges correctly.
- Must be passionate about hospitality, food, and have menu knowledge. Must be able to describe all menu items and assist patrons with a great dining experience.
- Must be able to identify food allergies and make proper recommendations.
- Must be able to recommend food pairing with wine.
- Must wear assigned uniforms and be clean, pressed, and wear their own name tag.
- Bartenders are responsible for preparing their closing shift report and related duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- High school education, GED, or equivalent experience.
- Must have 2 years of previous bartender experience in a high-volume restaurant and/or hotel.
- Must have the ability to perform daily work at a high level of accuracy.
- Must have knowledge of alcohol beverages and wine.
- Must be able to take direction well.
- Must pay attention to detail.
- Must feel comfortable memorizing orders and specials.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have professional appearance and behavior.
- Must have interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be proficient in technology skills on the POS system.
- Must be able to multitask without getting flustered.
- Must perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner.
- Hours required: Scheduled days and hours vary based on departmental needs.
Licenses and/or Certifications
- TABC Certification is required.
Physical Job Requirements
Must be able to meet the following minimum physical requirements for at least an eight-hour shift:
- Physical stamina: frequent standing, walking, climbing of ladders and stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying various objects weighing up to 30 lbs. Must work safely and effectively in outdoor temperatures. Summer temperatures outside can exceed 95°F for 5 months of the year. For 2 months of the year, low temperatures can fall below 20°F.
- Hearing/Speech: must engage in one‑on‑one communication with guests, members, and customers and use a 2‑way radio to communicate clearly and accurately with coworkers.
- Vision: must read instructions, reports, and log sheets accurately and use computers and PDAs in varying light conditions.
- Literacy: must produce, read, and understand reports, including security, incident, and police reports. Must analyze and process written information from various sources and effectively communicate content of reports.
- Chemicals/Agents: must work safely with chemicals according to SDS sheets and all applicable laws, codes, and regulatory requirements.
