Job summary

The U.S. Coast Guard seeks a Bartender in Ketchikan, Alaska, to prepare alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, serve customers, and assist with inventory and cash handling. You will follow recipes, maintain a sanitary bar, and ensure accurate records of liquor usage.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manages receipts, inventory, and cash handling; may document cash funds accountability.
  • Completes required alcohol service training and adheres to safety procedures.
  • Identifies unruly patrons and follows procedures to resolve issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position: Bartender-05 Salary: $20.85/hour

DUTIES

Prepares alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks following a variety of established and complex recipes. Serves patrons directly or delivers to wait staff.

Ensures bar is in a presentable and sanitary condition. Assures an adequate stock level is maintained, sets up storeroom and work area to permit easy access to stock items. Maintains work area neat and clean. Washes bar equipment, glassware, and utensils following proper sanitation procedures. Stocks services bars as required.

Responsible for the proper operation of the bar, receipts, and inventory accountability. Assists in taking inventory and maintaining records on which drinks and liquors are in greatest demand. Accepts money, operates cash register, and makes change. May be required to prepare documentation for cash funds accountability.

Completes required training in the serving of alcohol beverages before starting work. Annual, local refresher training is required and must be documented. Identifies persons who become unruly or who appear intoxicated, resolves the problem, or seeks assistance in accordance with established procedures.

Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Uses required safety equipment, and observes safe work procedures. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Must have working knowledge of sanitation procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
  • 1. Experience mixing alcoholic beverages for retail sale which includes knowledge of a wide variety of beverages and ability to combine ingredients such as liquors, soda water, sugar, bitters and fruit and the ability to mix exotic drinks.
  • 2. Experience recognizing intoxicated or unruly patrons and to resolving the problem or seeking assistance.
  • 3. Experience following proper cash handling procedures.
  • 4. Must be able to stoop, stand, and walk for long periods of time.
  • 5. Must be physically able to frequently lift objects weighing 5 to 10 pounds, pull and push objects weighing 10 to 20 pounds, and occasionally lift up to and over 40 pounds.
  • 6. Must meet the appropriate minimum age requirement for working with and/or serving alcoholic beverages.
Preferred (in addition to the minimum):
  • Two years of experience as a bartender.
