Job summary

Pierce Manufacturing, a leading maker of fire apparatus, is hiring a Bar Operator (Machine Operator I) in Wisconsin. You will check job sheets, set up mills, lathes and related equipment, and work hands-on to build our rugged trucks.

Openings on 1st shift with overtime; prefer applicants with basic tool experience and ability to read blueprints. We offer competitive pay starting at $25.15–26.80 per hour plus shift premiums and a comprehensive benefits package.

  • Shift times and overtime hours vary dependent on position, department, and location
  • 1st Shift: Monday – Thursday, four 10-hour days, overtime worked at the end of shift and on Fridays and occasionally Saturdays
Summary Of Job Description

The Bar Operator (Machine Operator I) position is responsible for checking job sheets and setting up machines for operation. In this hands-on manufacturing role, team members have the opportunity to work with a variety of machining and fabrication equipment and build skills across multiple machines and processes. The team member may operate different machines to complete assigned tasks, including mills, lathes, saws, punches, and tube benders. The team member must be able to read blueprints and troubleshoot basic equipment and machines. This position is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, learning new equipment, and seeing their work contribute directly to the manufacturing of our products. The team member must maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Essential Functions
  • Communicate verbally with co-workers to promote teamwork and maintain a safe working environment
  • Operate a variety of different machines and equipment to include but not limited to: mills, lathes, saws, punches, and tube benders
  • Develop skills across multiple machines and processes based on production needs
  • Set up and prepare parts for cutting and milling operations
  • Use computer systems to support machine setup and operation
  • Load/unload materials into machines and equipment
  • Read and apply measurements to parts and equipment
  • Read and understand blueprints, schematic diagrams, etc.
  • Read and interpret job routings and paperwork
  • Identify basic machine or process issues and assist with troubleshooting to keep production moving
  • Lift light and/or heavy parts on and off a cart, floor, shelf, etc.
  • Use a cart to push/pull equipment and parts to and from designated areas
  • Follow written and verbal instructions to complete tasks
  • Work collaboratively with team members to meet safety, quality, and production expectations
  • Assist co-workers with lifting parts
  • Identify and select appropriate parts and tools for assigned tasks
  • Sweep and clean shop area
  • Work overtime and rotate jobs as needed
Marginal Work Functions

These functions may be considered essential based on location, position, and other factors.

  • Grinding, buffing, drilling, and bending materials*
  • Assist in inventory of parts*
  • Operate a materials cart or forklift to transport truck parts to and from designated areas*
Basic Qualifications
  • Previous experience with basic hand tools.
Preferred Qualifications To Complete Essential Functions
  • 1 or more years of metal fabrication or machining experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with Pierce as a Team Member or Contractor.
  • Experience operating or setting up equipment such as mills, lathes, saws, punches, or tube benders.
  • Ability to read blueprints, use a tape measure, and work from job routings or manufacturing instructions.
