Job description

Build and Lead a Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Practice Within an Established, Growing Commercial Firm

Our firm is seeking an experienced Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Partner to establish and build out a dedicated insolvency practice as part of our growing commercial law platform. This is a rare opportunity to build a practice from a position of strength: rather than starting from zero, you will step into a firm with 40+ years of market presence, an established base of business clients, entrepreneurs, real estate investors, and high net worth individuals, and a leadership team committed to actively feeding and growing your book of business.

Candidates should be capable of self-sustaining practice management from day one but should not expect to build alone. Our Commercial Lending, Commercial Real Estate, and Corporate/M&A groups regularly encounter clients who need creditor’s rights and insolvency counsel – workouts, loan enforcement, receiverships, and bankruptcy litigation – and currently refer that work outside the firm. We are looking for the right attorney to capture it.

About the Firm
  • A Maryland-based commercial law firm with more than 40 years in practice, currently staffed by approximately 26 attorneys and pursuing a strategic growth plan.
  • Full-service practice groups spanning Corporate/M&A, Commercial Real Estate, Commercial Lending, Land Use, Community Associations, Litigation, Tax, Trusts & Estates, and Family Law.
  • A client base concentrated in closely held businesses, entrepreneurs, real estate investors and developers, banks and credit unions, and high net worth individuals – a natural pipeline for creditor’s rights and insolvency work.
  • Newly opened, modern office at 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Fourth Floor, Bethesda, Maryland, reflecting the firm’s continued investment in growth and infrastructure.
What You Will Do
  • Establish, lead, and grow a bankruptcy and creditors’ rights practice within the firm, with autonomy to build your own client relationships and practice systems.
  • Represent secured and unsecured creditors, lenders, landlords, and trustees in Chapter 7, 11, and receivership proceedings.
  • Advise on out-of-court workouts, forbearance agreements, loan restructurings, and distressed asset transactions.
  • Represent clients in adversary proceedings, preference and fraudulent transfer actions, and contested matters in bankruptcy court.
  • Partner with the firm’s Commercial Lending, Commercial Real Estate, and Corporate attorneys on transactions with a distressed asset or credit-risk component.
  • Serve as the firm’s go-to creditors’ rights resource for existing clients, converting outside referral work into in-house engagements.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop associate talent as the practice grows.
  • Participate in firm-wide business development and represent the practice in the firm’s broader growth strategy.
What We Are Looking For
  • An established bankruptcy and creditors’ rights practitioner (partner-level) with a portable book of business or a demonstrated ability to generate one quickly.
  • Deep experience representing institutional and private lenders, landlords, or other creditor-side constituencies in bankruptcy and insolvency matters.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Bankruptcy Code, UCC Article 9, and related state and federal law.
  • A track record of self-sufficient practice management – comfortable owning client relationships, billing, and practice economics.
  • An entrepreneurial, collaborative mindset and interest in building something within a firm that will actively support that growth, rather than joining a practice that already exists.
  • Maryland/DC/Virginia bar admission preferred (or willingness to obtain); active JD and clean disciplinary record required.
What the Firm Offers
  • A steady stream of internal referrals from an established, multi-practice client base – lenders, real estate investors, and business owners – who already need creditors’ rights counsel.
  • Cross-practice collaboration with Commercial Lending, Commercial Real Estate, and Litigation attorneys to source and expand engagements.
  • A competitive, transparent compensation structure aligned to self-sustaining practice economics, with the support and infrastructure to accelerate growth beyond what an independent or small-firm practice could achieve alone.
  • Modern, newly built office space in Bethesda, firm-wide marketing and business development support, and an administrative infrastructure built to scale.
  • A seat at the table in a firm actively investing in strategic growth – with the opportunity to shape the bankruptcy and creditor’s rights practice as a core pillar of that expansion.
