Job summary

Dorchester County in South Carolina seeks a Court Security Officer to maintain security, decorum, and orderly conduct within courtrooms and related judicial facilities. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Qualifications

• High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
• Prior experience in law enforcement, corrections, military, or court security is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain order and security in assigned courtrooms and adjacent judicial areas.
• Screen and monitor courtroom participants, visitors, and jurors for compliance with courtroom procedures.
• Escort judges, jurors, inmates, witnesses, and other individuals as required.
• Coordinate with law enforcement agencies, detention personnel, and court staff regarding inmate movement and courtroom security.
• Announce the opening and closing of court sessions and provide courtroom instructions as directed by the presiding judge.
• Respond appropriately to disruptions, emergencies, or security concerns within judicial facilities.
• Monitor courtroom entrances and exits to ensure authorized access and public safety.
• Assist with jury management activities including jury check-in, escort, and communication.
• Prepare courtroom areas prior to hearings and trials to ensure readiness and professionalism.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and court proceedings.
• Complete incident reports, activity logs, and other documentation as required.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service to the public and court participants.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
• Prior experience in law enforcement, corrections, military, court security, or related public safety field preferred.

Special Qualifications, Certifications and Licenses:

• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
• Must be able to successfully pass applicable background checks and any required drug screening.
• Certification or training in courtroom security, defensive tactics, CPR, or related areas may be preferred or required.
