DELI COMBO CLERK
Purpose Statement: To maximize sales and profit in the Bakery and Deli Department through courteous customer service while maintaining optimum department conditions.
Significant Job Responsibilities
- Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcomed and appreciated by answering all questions regarding products sold in the department and throughout the store.
- Bake products including but not limited to breads, rolls, buns, cakes, pies, pastries, and brownies.
- Wrap/package and sell bakery and deli products.
- Accurately record customers’ orders/requests for cakes and other bakery items.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately by operating an electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
- Review the perishable department Communication Board daily for updated materials and follow the guidelines posted for the Sampling Program and intercom announcements.
- Prepare/organize cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, verify merchandise against the invoice, inspect delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code date all case items in cooler/freezer.
- Adhere to all local, state and federal health codes and regulations and clean department floors, mirrors, case, tables, cooler, freezer, production equipment, product preparation area, and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- Transport cases to sales floor/cooler/freezer/product preparation area on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in designated cooler/freezer/case/shelf/display position, check product code/freshness date and “face/front” rotate the front row of each display.
- Assure safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up/remove all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or product preparation area immediately.
- Understand operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, scales, wrapper, steam table, proofer, oven, convection oven, mixer, bread slicer, fryer, stove. Must be 18 years or older to operate pallet jack, baler, slicer, steam table and fryer and other equipment.
- Evaluate product quality in bakery/deli and move damaged/unsalable and “returnable” products from the case to preparation area, reprocessing the merchandise into a saleable form or marking the product down in price according to markdown policy.
- Check case and cooler/freezer temperatures 4 times daily utilizing time keeping system to record each check.
- Record “out-of-stock” conditions and time they occur and report to department manager.
- Replenish/stock inventory in deli/bakery area inc. donut case, cookie case, cake case, other display cases, counter, and display tables throughout the store.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers, and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers.
Supervision Received: Deli Combo Clerk reports directly to the Bakery Deli Manager.
Required Qualifications
- Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
- Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
- Ability to read and write English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
- Good interpersonal communications.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in a related type of job.
- Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knife, slicer, scales, cash register, steam table, wrapper, fryer, and stove. Must be 18 years or older to operate pallet jack, baler, slicer, steam table, and fryer.
Tasks of the Job – Mobility and Physical Demands
- Move to perform: receiving of product, movement to floor or storage, opening/cutting cases, inspecting product quality, sorting cases/merchandise, building displays in aisle and on case/rack, allocating space in bakery categories, ordering merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removal of trash/debris, price‑marking and signage, approximately maximum of 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
- Lift a maximum of 50 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches onto overhead/cooler/freezer storage rack.
- Move a maximum of 50 lbs. up to 15 yards.
- Pick up/move/attach signage, sort, open “face/front” case/item/trash from floor/shelf/cart/pallet/cooler/freezer storage.
- Attain merchandise/cases on top shelf of cooler/freezer storage shelves/rack, up to 84 inches from the floor.
- Reach forward or down up to 36 inches to obtain/place merchandise, prepare and package product, and clean shelves/floor area or operate maintenance/stocking equipment.
- Reach up to place signs and banners.
- Handle labels, signs, tags, cardboard/packaging, debris, case-cutter/utility knife.
- Handle cash, checks, WIC and other vouchers, credit/debit, EBT transactions, paper/plastic bags and store’s multi‑page ads.
- Grasp and handle wet/iced/cold/metal/paper/plastic products.
- Twist at waist while cleaning, cutting/opening, sorting, loading/unloading, moving/removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
- Move stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 300 lbs.) and maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards.
- Climb on ladders, racks, cases, shelving, and stairs up to 3 feet in height.
- Stock shelves, rotate product, “face/front” shelves 8 inches from floor to 36 inches in height.
- Be aware of cases, case-cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description, equipment controls, case-load limits, price‑marking equipment, department production equipment, customers, co‑workers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, temperature gauges/controls, invoice/packing slips, code date, reports, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
- Perceive color difference of product, product labels, and condition of product.
- Respond to customer, co‑worker and vendor questions and responses.
- Respond to sound of baler/pallet jack and cleaning equipment.
- Use and respond to intercom/phone system.
- Read case labels/strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, code dates, invoices, temperature gauges, reports, numbers and aisle markers, chemical warning labels, operational forms and reports.
Work Environment
Inside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity from backdoor/compressors/cooler/freezer/preparation area.
