Job description

Job Summary

Bailiff will play a critical role in maintaining order and ensuring the security and safety of the court premises, staff, and visitors. Bailiff will collaborate closely with judges, attorneys, and other court personnel to ensure the smooth functioning of court proceedings. This position requires strong law enforcement experience, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment within courtrooms during hearings and trials. Screen individuals entering the courtroom and enforce security protocols as required.
  • Preserve decorum in the courtroom, ensuring proper conduct of all individuals present. Respond to disruptive behavior and take appropriate action to de‑escalate conflicts.
  • Execute court orders, such as arrest warrants, search warrants, and eviction notices. Safely apprehend and transport individuals as required.
  • Oversee jury selection and manage jurors during trials, ensuring their comfort and adherence to court rules.
  • Provide protection and support to witnesses during court proceedings, ensuring their safety and security.
  • Maintain accurate records of court proceedings, including the entry of court orders and other relevant information.
  • Assist judges and attorneys during court sessions, providing support in locating documents and facilitating communication.
  • Ensure that all necessary equipment, such as audiovisual aids and security devices, is in proper working order.
  • Respond to emergencies and security threats in a prompt and efficient manner. Coordinate with law enforcement agencies if necessary.
  • Educate the public about courtroom procedures, security measures, and the role of the Court Bailiff in maintaining order and safety.
  • Safely transport prisoners to and from the courtroom, maintaining control and ensuring their security throughout the process.
  • Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities for efficient and secure prisoner transfers.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations within the courtroom, such as medical emergencies or disturbances.
  • Coordinate with court personnel and law enforcement agencies to ensure appropriate response and resolution.
  • Maintain accurate records related to court proceedings, prisoner transports, and other assigned tasks.
  • Prepare and submit reports on incidents, security breaches, or any other relevant occurrences.
  • Issue and distribute civil process papers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • MUST MAINTAIN STRICT CONFIDENTIALITY OF ALL INFORMATION PROCESSED THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT INCLUDING RECORDS, REPORTS, DOCUMENTS, CONVERSATIONS, ETC.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Must have working knowledge of Booking, Confinement, and Main Control correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to plan, organize, and assign the work of others.
  • Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill in the supervision of employees and inmates.
Experience & Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework or relevant certifications preferred.
  • Minimum 1 years of experience as a Bailiff or in a related law enforcement role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound knowledge of courtroom procedures, legal terminology, and law enforcement practices.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high‑pressure situations.
  • Certified sworn peace officer in good standing required.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft (office & business) applications.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This is not a supervisory position.

Physical Requirements / Working Environment

Place of duty and environmental conditions can be extremely austere, harsh, and work can be performed under hostile and life‑threatening conditions. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, steps, and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, operate motor equipment, perform tactile discernment, and restrain assaultive persons.
