Job description

This Baggage Handler position is full-time during the summer season, with a split shift schedule. Incumbents will work a four (4) hour shift in the morning and a four (4) hour shift in the evening.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Incumbent performs duties at the Passenger Depot related to serving the public with baggage-related issues, including customer service, loading baggage, and performing maintenance, janitorial, and landscaping duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs baggage handling duties of loading/unloading, stowing, and delivering baggage to and from trains using a forklift.
  2. Operates government vehicles (sedans, pickup trucks) requiring a valid driver’s license.
  3. Provides service to the public by answering inquiries regarding passenger, baggage, and related information, such as baggage rates, events, activities, and local transportation options.
  4. Acts as a source of information on other transportation modes such as cabs and buses.
  5. Responsible for general housekeeping and maintenance of the building and grounds, ensuring property is clean and orderly.
  6. Handles problem resolution regarding lost or damaged bags, documenting unresolved issues.
  7. Works with security on personal lost and found items onboard trains and stations.
  8. Documents train departure and arrival times in a computer database.
  9. Communicates via email and phone with other depots regarding depot, baggage, and train information.
  10. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.

Factor 1 – Skill and Knowledge

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, equipment maintenance, and work area upkeep per ARRC safety rules.
  • Excellent customer service skills to handle customers professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to operate tools such as hammers, shovels, brooms, power vacuums, and forklifts with a load capacity up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Ability to read and write, interpret instructions, and work alertness around equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate vehicles and forklifts.

Factor 2 - Responsibilities

Works under the supervision of the Manager, Guest Services, Manager, Fairbanks Depot Operations, Passenger Operations Supervisor, Seward, or Lead Baggage Handler, receiving daily instructions.

Factor 3 - Physical Effort

Requires physical exertion such as standing for long periods, crouching, stooping, bending, and working in tiring positions. Frequently lifts, pushes, pulls, or carries baggage weighing 40-100 pounds, and must be capable of walking and climbing.

Factor 4 - Work Conditions

Works inside and outside in various weather conditions, including cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lit areas, and in inclement weather such as rain, wind, or snow.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to walk, climb in/out of baggage cars, and lift/push/pull bags from 40-100 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate/drive vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a forklift.
