Job summary

Cherokee Nation Integrated Health (CNIH) is seeking a Bacteriology Lab Technician III to support animal studies, immunological research, and laboratory operations in ABSL-2/ABSL-3 settings. Qualifications

  • Experience working in or supporting BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 environments.
  • Experience with animal manipulations, injections, observations, sample collection, challenges, or necropsies preferred.
  • Experience performing immunological assays (ELISpot, ELISA, Luminex) and related tests.
  • Ability to prepare media, reagents and materials per protocols.
  • Ability to follow approved protocols and safety procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and assist with inventory management.
  • Ability to work in regulated laboratory environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in approximately 10 animal studies annually in ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 environments and perform animal manipulations following required training and protocols.
  • Prepare and administer antibiotics, vaccines, immunomodulators, monoclonal antibodies, and other study materials via various routes.
  • Perform animal health exams, observations, injections, collections, challenges, and necropsies per protocols.
  • Carry out hundreds of injections and observations and numerous tissue/burden assessments yearly.
  • Assist with animal challenges and bacterial preparation for studies.
  • Support immunological studies (ELISpot, ELISA, Luminex) as needed.
  • Complete ELISpot, ELISA, and Luminex assays with specified annual targets.
  • Maintain laboratory materials inventories and manage BSAT materials.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings and help design current/future studies.
  • Assist in presenting findings and travel for conferences if required.
  • Maintain safe, compliant BSL-2/3 labs and assist with safety functions.
  • Manage equipment and chemical inventories and procurement.
  • Process lab orders and ensure compliance with IACUC and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Bacteriology Technician (Lab Tech III)

***This position requires an active Secret clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret clearance to be considered. ***

Cherokee Nation Integrated Health (CNIH) is seeking a Bacteriology Lab Technician III to support animal studies, immunological research, laboratory operations, and biological testing activities in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments. In this role, you will participate in animal studies, perform laboratory assays and animal manipulations, support in vitro and in vivo research, and assist with laboratory management and biological materials inventory activities.

The successful candidate will possess experience or training in laboratory research, animal studies, immunological assays, or a related scientific environment, along with the ability to work effectively in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory settings. The position requires careful adherence to approved study protocols, laboratory safety requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with laboratory scientists and research personnel to support ongoing studies and contribute to the development and execution of current and future research activities.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Bacteriology Technician (Lab Tech III): $60,000 - $65,000

Pay commensurate with experience.

Bacteriology Technician (Lab Tech III) Responsibilities Include:
  • Participate in approximately 10 animal studies annually in ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 environments and perform animal manipulations following required training and approved protocols.

  • Prepare and administer antibiotics, vaccines, immunomodulators, monoclonal antibodies, and other study materials orally and through intraperitoneal, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous bolus injections.

  • Perform animal health examinations, observations, injections, fluid and tissue collection, animal challenges, and necropsies in accordance with approved study protocols.

  • Perform approximately 400 animal injections, 400 animal observations, 250 bacterial burden assessments in organ tissue, and 125 animal necropsies annually.

  • Assist with approximately five animal challenges per year and prepare approximately 30 bacterial challenge preparations.

  • Participate in BSL-2 and BSL-3 immunological studies, including ELISpot, ELISA, Luminex, and other laboratory protocols as needed.

  • Complete approximately 30 ELISpot assays, 200 ELISA assays, and 50 Luminex assays annually.

  • Complete approximately 50 media and reagent preparations annually to support laboratory studies.

  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and assist with the development and design of current and future in vitro and in vivo research activities.

  • Assist with scientific presentations and may be requested to present a poster at one scientific conference. Conference participation may require local or CONUS travel and work outside normal business hours.

  • Maintain laboratories in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments and support laboratory safety and operational requirements.

  • Perform or assist with BSAT inventory management, including applicable BSAT working stock materials.

  • Conduct or assist with equipment inventory management twice annually in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories.

  • Perform or assist with monthly laboratory management activities, including safety functions and chemical inventory.

  • Place approximately 50 GFEB orders annually for laboratory supplies and equipment.

  • Ensure study activities remain compliant with IACUC-approved protocols and applicable laboratory and regulatory requirements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Bacteriology Technician (Lab Tech III) Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • Experience or training in laboratory research, animal studies, immunology, biology, microbiology, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Experience working in or supporting BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 laboratory environments.

  • Experience performing or assisting with animal manipulations, injections, observations, sample collection, animal challenges, or necropsies preferred.

  • Experience performing or assisting with immunological laboratory assays, including ELISpot, ELISA, Luminex, or related biological assays.

  • Ability to prepare media, reagents, and bacterial challenge materials in accordance with established protocols.

  • Ability to follow IACUC-approved protocols and established laboratory safety and operational procedures.

  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and support inventory management activities for biological materials, equipment, supplies, and chemicals.

  • Ability to perform or assist with BSAT inventory management, including applicable BSAT working stock materials.

  • Ability to work effectively in a laboratory environment requiring adherence to BSL-2 and BSL-3 safety requirements.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately perform laboratory procedures and document study activities.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with laboratory scientists and other research personnel.

  • Ability to participate in weekly laboratory meetings and contribute to the development and execution of current and future in vitro and in vivo research activities.

  • Ability to support scientific presentations and travel for scientific conferences, as required.

  • Ability to work outside normal business hours when required to support research activities.

  • Must maintain CS-PRP enrollment in accordance with the provisions in the contract and all applicable regulations.

  • Must maintain BPRP enrollment in accordance with the provisions in the contract and all applicable regulations.

  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting animal studies in ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 environments.

  • Experience performing animal injections, health observations, sample collection, animal challenges, bacterial burden assessments, or necropsies.

  • Experience performing ELISpot, ELISA, Luminex, or other immunological assays.

  • Experience supporting bacterial challenge studies or biological burden assessments.

  • Experience supporting laboratory operations, including safety activities, chemical inventories, equipment inventories, and biological materials inventories.

  • Experience working with BSAT or other regulated biological materials.

  • Experience supporting both in vitro and in vivo research activities.

  • Experience preparing scientific posters or presenting research findings at scientific conferences.
