A Utility Backhoe Operator isresponsible for safely and efficiently operating a backhoe to excavate and move materials for utility projects, such as digging trenches for pipelines, cables, and other underground infrastructure.They also perform routine maintenance on the equipment, follow safety procedures, and collaborate with other crew members.
Responsibilities
- This includes digging trenches, excavating materials, moving loads, and performing other tasks required for utility construction.
- Prior to digging, they are responsible for locating existing underground utilities (like pipes and wires) to ensure safe excavation and prevent damage.
- This includes performing daily maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on the backhoe.
- They must adhere to all company and OSHA safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe excavation practices.
- They work with crew members, supervisors, and other stakeholders to coordinate activities and ensure smooth project execution. This may include assisting with other aspects of utility construction, such as setting up equipment, placing cables or conduit, and performing basic labor tasks.
Qualifications
- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Able to lift 50 pounds. Able to walk moderate distances to reach work area.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Must have good hand-eye coordination, quick reaction times.
- Required to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- A sound understanding of pertinent safety guidelines.
- Capacity to provide and follow direction.
- Sharp decision-making skills, particularly when under pressure.
- Safe operation of hand tools.
- Ability to work extended hours, as required including night work and Saturdays.
- Travel to jobsites within 70 miles of main office in Honesdale, PA.
- Pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
