Job summary

Total-Western, Inc. is seeking a skilled Backhoe Operator for field-based construction sites in California.

You will safely operate backhoe equipment to perform digging, trenching, grading, and material handling, ensuring work aligns with project plans and safety standards. The role requires attention to detail, ability to read basic blueprints, and teamwork with supervisors and colleagues to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a backhoe operator or in a similar heavy equipment operator role.
  • Certification in operating backhoe equipment (preferred but not required).
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures and safety regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow project specifications and guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic construction plans and blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Operate backhoe equipment to perform digging, trenching, and excavation work in accordance with project requirements and safety protocols.
  • Prepare and excavate sites for construction, ensuring that all work is done with precision and in line with project specifications.
  • Use the backhoe to load and unload materials, move dirt, rocks, and debris, and assist with other tasks as required by the project manager or supervisor.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections of the backhoe, ensuring it is in safe working condition and perform basic maintenance tasks.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and company protocols to ensure a safe work environment and report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
  • Coordinate with other construction workers, supervisors, and project managers to ensure work is completed according to project plans and deadlines.
  • Assist with site cleanup and restoration at the end of the workday.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Backhoe Operator to join our team. The Backhoe Operator will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating backhoe equipment to perform various tasks, including digging, trenching, grading, and material handling on construction sites. This role is critical to the success of construction projects, ensuring that all work is completed to specification and in compliance with safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation

Operate backhoe equipment to perform digging, trenching, and excavation work in accordance with project requirements and safety protocols.

Site Preparation And Excavation

Prepare and excavate sites for construction, ensuring that all work is done with precision and in line with project specifications. Maintain awareness of surrounding hazards and other workers on site.

Material Handling

Use the backhoe to load and unload materials, move dirt, rocks, and debris, and assist with other tasks as required by the project manager or supervisor.

Maintenance And Safety Checks

Conduct daily safety inspections of the backhoe, ensuring it is in safe working condition. Perform basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels to ensure the equipment runs smoothly.

Worksite Safety

Follow all safety guidelines and company protocols to ensure a safe work environment for yourself and your team. Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.

Collaboration With Team Members

Coordinate with other construction workers, supervisors, and project managers to ensure work is completed according to project plans and deadlines.

Site Cleanup And Restoration

Assist with the cleanup of job sites, including the proper disposal of materials, and restoring the site to a clean and organized state at the end of the workday.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a backhoe operator or in a similar heavy equipment operator role.
  • Certification in operating backhoe equipment (preferred but not required).
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures and safety regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow project specifications and guidelines.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, taking direction from supervisors and collaborating with others.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic construction plans and blueprints.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with other construction machinery (e.g., skid steer, bulldozer, excavator).
  • Knowledge of excavation and grading techniques.
  • Previous experience in construction, industrial, or commercial environments.
  • Certification in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards or other safety certifications.
Work Environment

This is a field-based position. The Backhoe Operator will work on construction sites in various locations, often outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Safety gear (e.g., helmet, gloves, vest) and adherence to safety protocols are required at all times.

Reporting Structure

The Backhoe Operator will report to the Site Supervisor or Project Manager and work closely with the rest of the construction team to ensure the completion of tasks in a safe and timely manner.
