Job summary

WEX, Inc. is seeking a Software Engineer Intern across the United States to work with engineers and Product Managers on distributed systems, backend components, and AI-guided development in a cloud environment.

The 13-week paid internship runs from late May to mid-August, with mentorship, professional development, and a path to potential full-time roles. Remote, hybrid, and onsite options are available to fit your schedule.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in CS/SE/ML or related field and will have completed at least sophomore year.
• Strong proficiency in C#, .NET and OOP fundamentals.
• Foundational understanding of identity and security protocols (OAuth, OIDC, JWT, Passkeys).
• Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker and GitHub CI/CD workflows.
• Interest or experience in AI skill-based agents; Python scripting is a plus.

About the Team/Role:

As a Software Engineer Intern, you will work alongside engineers and Product Managers to tackle complex distributed systems challenges. In an evolving tech stack driven by AI-assisted and spec-driven development, you will focus on core software engineering principles, building backend components, and experimenting with AI agents in the cloud.

How you'll make an impact:

• Engineered Backend Solutions: Write clean, scalable code using C# / .NET based on strong Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles.

• Implement Cloud Security: Integrate secure authentication and authorization protocols (OAuth, OIDC, JWT, Passkeys) into application workflows.

• Cloud & DevOps Workflows: Containerize applications using Docker and manage automated CI/CD pipelines on AWS using GitHub.

• Innovate with AI: Collaborate with senior engineers to explore, build, and integrate skill-based AI agents and productivity scripting.

Experience you'll bring:

• Educational Foundation: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, or related field and will have completed at least your Sophomore year of school at the start of the internship.

• Strong proficiency in C#, .NET, and Object-Oriented design fundamentals.

• Foundational understanding of identity and security protocols (OAuth, OIDC, JWT, or Passkeys).

• Hands-on exposure to AWS, Docker containerization, and GitHub CI/CD workflows.

• Experience or interest in building AI skill-based agents, along with basic Python scripting skills, is a plus.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
