Job summary

tastytrade in Chicago is seeking a Software Engineer to help power our retail brokerage and other initiatives. You will work on back-end services in a distributed architecture, balancing performance and reliability, and collaborating across teams.

While Ruby is preferred, we welcome strong OO developers in Java or other languages who are ready to embrace Ruby. You will code, test, and contribute to evolving systems in a hybrid 3-days-in-office model.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional Ruby experience.
• Production experience with OO languages (e.g. Java) and a commitment to using Ruby.
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new languages and frameworks.
• Accountability and willingness to own your work.
• Curiosity and proactive problem-solving attitude.

Responsibilities

• Work in multiple languages across different parts of the tastytrade stack and front-end trading client applications.
• Design, build and maintain services in a distributed architecture, focusing on failure modes, latency and data consistency.
• Provide guidance and leadership to junior team members on language and implementation specifics.
• Translate requirements and technical direction into production-quality code with guidance from a senior engineer.
• Work independently on smaller tasks and contribute to larger projects under senior guidance.
• Write comprehensive tests for your code.
• Engage in light infrastructure work to support development.
• Grow toward ownership of tastytrade's systems.
