Job summary

Plane is seeking a backend engineer to own Django/Python-based surfaces and scale real-time workflows across thousands of workspaces. You will work on API contracts, data models, migrations, and real-time sync paths with event streams and caching, collaborating with engineers in San Francisco and Hyderabad.

You should have shipped Python to production, Django or a comparable framework, and strong SQL and async Python skills, plus a track record debugging production issues.

Qualifications

• Shipped Python to production and can point to a concrete project.
• Experience with Django or a comparable framework; models, migrations, and request cycle familiar.
• Comfortable with SQL and reading/explaining query plans; able to optimize with indexes.
• Experience writing asynchronous Python (asyncio) in production traffic.
• Proven ability to debug production incidents and implement fixes.
• Clear written communication and active participation in public issue threads.

Responsibilities

• Own backend surfaces end to end, from API contracts and data models to migrations and rollout.
• Extend real-time sync paths with event streams, change data capture, and caching layers.
• Improve query performance as workspaces scale; read and optimize queries and indexes.
• Instrument deployments so degradations show up in dashboards; respond to incidents as needed.
• Collaborate daily with product and frontend engineers across San Francisco and Hyderabad.
