Job summary

Evlo AI in Washington DC seeks a backend engineer to design and build core services powering customer-facing products accessed daily. You will own end-to-end backend systems, including API design, data modeling, and performance tuning.

You will partner with frontend/mobile teams, product managers, and infra to ship features end-to-end on AWS, using Docker and Kubernetes, with reliability and latency targets and well-reviewed code.

Qualifications

• 3–7 years of backend software engineering experience with production ownership.
• Deep proficiency in at least one backend language: Python, Go, Java, or Node.js.
• Strong relational database skills — PostgreSQL/MySQL; indexing and optimization.
• Hands-on AWS experience with ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3 and containerized deployments.
• Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: caching, retries, idempotency, latency budgets.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services in Python, Go, or Node.js, exposing REST and gRPC APIs.
• Own database architecture across PostgreSQL and Redis, including schema design and migrations.
• Build and operate event-driven pipelines using Kafka (or SQS/SNS) to handle asynchronous workflows at scale.
• Ship services to production on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes, with monitoring and on-call ownership.
• Write unit, integration, and load tests; maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for deployments.
• Collaborate with frontend and mobile engineers on API contracts, latency budgets, and feature scoping.
• Participate in architecture reviews, incident postmortems, and engineering standards.

Day-to-day work spans API design, data modeling, distributed systems, and performance tuning — with direct ownership of services, not just tickets.

You will partner closely with frontend and mobile engineers, product managers, and infrastructure teams to ship features end-to-end. The systems are real: production traffic, live customers, meaningful reliability and latency targets, and code that gets reviewed, deployed, and measured.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services in Python, Go, or Node.js, exposing clean, versioned REST and gRPC APIs consumed by web and mobile clients
• Own database architecture across PostgreSQL and Redis, including schema design, query optimization, and migration strategies
• Build and operate event-driven pipelines using Kafka (or SQS/SNS) to handle asynchronous workflows at scale
• Ship services to production on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes, with full ownership of monitoring, alerting, and on-call rotation
• Write comprehensive unit, integration, and load tests; maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for fast, safe deployments
• Collaborate with frontend and mobile engineers on API contracts, latency budgets, and feature scoping during planning
• Participate in architecture reviews, incident postmortems, and design docs; contribute to team engineering standards

What We Are Looking For

• 3–7 years of backend software engineering experience, including production ownership of services with real traffic
• Deep proficiency in at least one backend language: Python, Go, Java, or Node.js
• Strong relational database skills — schema design, indexing, query optimization with PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Hands-on experience with AWS (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3) and containerized deployments with Docker/Kubernetes
• Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: caching, idempotency, retries, eventual consistency, and API rate limiting
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
