Job summary

TEKsystems is seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer in Raleigh, NC to build and scale a network simulation platform. You will design backend services that power creation, deployment, orchestration, and management of virtual networks for engineers worldwide.

You will collaborate with frontend, QA, architects, and product teams to improve performance, scalability, and user experience while leveraging Linux, RESTful APIs, and container tech such as Docker/Kubernetes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong programming experience in Python and/or Go.
• Strong understanding of Linux operating systems and systems programming concepts.
• Experience designing, developing, and supporting production-grade RESTful APIs.
• Hands-on experience with virtualization or container technologies including QEMU, Libvirt, Docker, or Kubernetes.
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, routing, switching, and network architectures.
• Experience troubleshooting performance issues and optimizing distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices including testing, version control, and CI/CD pipelines.

Description

The team is seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to help build and scale the network simulation platform. In this role, you will design and develop backend services that power the creation, deployment, orchestration, and management of complex virtual network topologies used by network engineers around the world. You will work at the intersection of software engineering, virtualization, cloud-native technologies, and networking to deliver scalable and reliable services that enable customers to model real-world enterprise and data center environments.

As part of a highly collaborative engineering team, you will partner closely with frontend engineers, QA teams, architects, and product stakeholders to deliver innovative capabilities that improve platform performance, scalability, and user experience.

Backend Services & Platform Development

• Design, develop, and maintain core backend services that orchestrate virtualized network environments and simulation workloads.
• Build highly scalable APIs that enable users to create, configure, deploy, and manage complex network topologies.
• Implement microservices and cloud-native architectures that support future platform growth and extensibility.
• Develop services that manage lifecycle operations for virtual machines, containers, and networking resources.

Virtualization & Infrastructure

• Integrate with virtualization technologies including QEMU, Libvirt, Docker, and Kubernetes to support large-scale network simulations.
• Optimize system resource utilization including CPU, memory, and storage across distributed simulation environments.
• Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks at the operating system, application, and infrastructure layers.

Networking & Automation

• Develop capabilities supporting network automation workflows and infrastructure-as-code testing.
• Build integrations with automation platforms such as Ansible, Terraform, Netmiko, or NAPALM.
• Apply strong networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, routing, switching, and network design concepts in application development.

Performance & Reliability

• Improve platform scalability and stability under heavy simulation loads.
• Design solutions that support high concurrency, low latency, and reliable service delivery.
• Implement monitoring, logging, testing, and automated validation practices to maintain platform quality.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with frontend engineers to provide efficient APIs and real-time data services that power topology visualization and simulation telemetry.
• Collaborate with product management, QA, designers, and network architects to deliver customer-focused solutions.
• Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $60.00/hr.
