Job summary

Authorities / Responsibilities
  • Understand and follow directions, maintain cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
  • Accountable for completing daily work assignments, signing off on work completion and quality.
  • Perform basic layout of plates, materials and weldments using basic engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams with minimal supervision.
  • Perform shipfitting functions including fit‑up of structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, prepping, tacking, arc gouging and back gouging of steel welds through mechanical flame.
  • Perform fitting operations with limited supervision using standard shipfitting equipment (milling discs, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, come along and chain falls, etc.).
  • Obtain GMAW ABS ‘B’ Class Weld Certification for aluminum and/or FCAW ‘B’ Class Weld Certification for steel.
  • Perform safe and effective use of craft‑related tools and equipment.
  • Interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels.
  • Monitor working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.
  • May be assigned to work any shift or perform tasks outside craft as required.

  • Ability to interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels.
  • Knowledge of equipment, work processes and techniques used in measuring and fitting of aluminum/steel components, modules and vessels.
  • Proficiency in metric system calculations.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout.
  • Ability to work any shift or overtime as required; schedule must be flexible.
Physical Demands
  • Must stand, walk, manipulate, reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; talk or hear; occasionally sit.
  • Must bend, squat, stoop, crawl, kneel; perform prolonged standing.
  • Ability to turn head side to side and about the vertical axis, and body at waist.
  • Lift/push/pull 50–75 lbs occasionally, up to 20 lbs frequently.
  • Climb safely via stairs, scaffolding, ladders, or ramps; work at heights above 12 ft.
  • Use personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel‑toe shoes, goggles, respirator, harness, heat/cold protection).
  • Work in confined spaces, 18” x 36” openings, and under loud noise.
