Job summary

Metra is seeking a Building & Bridges Mechanic Assistant to support construction and maintenance of infrastructure that keeps trains running safely and reliably. This union role involves working outdoors in all weather, and lifting heavy materials while following CBA guidelines.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, construction/maintenance experience, and a valid driver's license. CDL and carpentry experience are preferred. Starting pay varies by entry rates under the CBA.

  • Must be able to lift, carry and move equipment/materials weighing up to 60-70 pounds.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in construction and maintenance of culverts, sewers, water lines, fences, and retaining walls, buildings, platforms, crossings, and related masonry/carpentry.
  • Work under both indoor and outdoor conditions in varying weather to support safe train operations.
  • Contribute to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of trains as part of the B&B team.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra’s fixed assets, including buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance. The department is staffed by more than 700 employees.

The Building and Bridges (B&B)Mechanic Assistantensures proper construction and maintenance of culverts, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water lines, fences and retaining walls, buildings, station platforms, highway grade crossings and general masonry and carpentry to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of trains.Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
