About the role:
Position Summary:

The Assistant Vice President, Senior Reserving Actuary is responsible for leading and executing actuarial reserving analyses for multiple Property & Casualty lines of business. This position plays a critical role in evaluating reserve adequacy, supporting financial reporting, and providing actionable insights to senior management. The AVP serves as a key business partner to Finance, Claims, Underwriting, Reinsurance, and Enterprise Risk Management, applying sound actuarial judgment and technical expertise to evaluate reserve trends, emerging risks, and profitability drivers.

The successful candidate will possess deep reserving expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to communicate complex actuarial findings effectively to executive leadership, auditors, and regulators.

Key Responsibilities:
Reserving & Actuarial Analysis:
  • Lead quarterly and annual loss and LAE reserve analyses for assigned Property & Casualty lines of business using accepted actuarial methodologies and best practices.
  • Evaluate reserve adequacy through analysis of loss development patterns, large losses, severity and frequency trends, tail factors, and exposure changes.
  • Select and recommend carried reserve positions, including preparation of supporting analysis and documentation for management review.
  • Identify emerging loss trends, reserve risks, and changes in business mix that may impact reserve estimates.
  • Perform deep‑diving analyses on accident years, business segments, coverages, and portfolios to understand key reserve drivers.
  • Utilize a variety of actuarial methods and judgment to assess reserve variability and quantify uncertainty.
  • Monitor reserve performance and communicate reserve movements and key assumptions to management.
Financial Reporting & Governance:
  • Support statutory, GAAP, and management reporting requirements related to loss reserves.
  • Prepare and review actuarial exhibits, reserve reviews, management presentations, and reserve memoranda.
  • Partner with Finance during quarterly and annual close processes to explain reserve changes and earnings impacts.
  • Support internal control frameworks, governance standards, SOX requirements, and reserve documentation standards.
  • Assist in actuarial support for external audits, regulatory reviews, and peer reviews.
  • Contribute to reserve committee materials and management reporting packages.
Business Partnership & Strategic Support:
  • Collaborate closely with Claims leadership to understand operational trends, claim handling practices, and drivers of loss emergence.
  • Partner with Underwriting and Pricing teams to provide insights on loss experience, profitability, and emerging portfolio risks.
  • Support reinsurance reserving analyses, ceded reserve evaluations, commutation studies, and reinsurance‑related reserve reporting.
  • Provide actuarial expertise for strategic initiatives, portfolio reviews, and business planning exercises.
  • Support enterprise risk management efforts by identifying reserve‑related risks and opportunities.
Process Improvement & Transformation:
  • Drive enhancements to reserving methodologies, governance processes, and analytical tools.
  • Lead or support automation initiatives focused on quarterly reserve studies, roll‑forward processes, data validation, and reporting efficiencies.
  • Promote the use of statistical techniques, data analytics, and technology solutions to improve reserving effectiveness.
  • Support modernization efforts through the use of actuarial software, data visualization, and programming tools.
Leadership & Talent Development:
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to actuarial analysts and junior actuaries.
  • Review actuarial analyses and work products to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and adherence to actuarial standards.
  • Assist in training, coaching, and professional development of actuarial staff.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on assigned lines of business and reserving methodologies.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) designation or equivalent level of actuarial expertise.
  • 10+ years of actuarial experience, including significant Property & Casualty reserving experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. P&C reserving methodologies, regulatory requirements, and actuarial standards of practice.
  • Experience supporting commercial and/or personal lines insurance portfolios.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing complex reserve indications and communicating findings to senior management.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel and actuarial reserving software such as ResQ, Arius, SAS, R, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts to both actuarial and non‑actuarial audiences.
Preferred:
  • Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation.
  • Experience supporting statutory, GAAP, and management reporting environments.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance structures, ceded reserving, and reinsurance accounting impacts.
  • Experience working with external auditors, peer reviewers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Programming and automation experience using R, Python, SQL, VBA, Power BI, or similar technologies.
  • Prior leadership, supervisory, or project management experience.
  • Experience leading reserving transformation, automation, or process improvement initiatives.

The base salary range for this position is $177,000 - $255,000 annually. The offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, experience, qualifications and work location.
