Job summary

A prominent financial technology company is seeking an API Engagement Engineer to advocate for application and service development teams. You will be responsible for providing best practices for REST API development and assist teams in leveraging APIs effectively. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of API development experience and strong skills in Java Spring and Node JS, among other qualifications. This position allows for flexible work arrangements, including options to work from home, as well as potential commuting to company offices for engagements.

Job description

Role Summary

Advocate the Application & Service development teams across the organization, managing multiple teams actively working at once. This person will provide best practices for REST API development, and provide solutions for highly complex multi-service application implementations. The API Engagement Engineer will also be designing and reviewing API specifications for REST best practices.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Teach teams to utilize our new suite of API development tools.
  • Provide architectural guidance for API & Application development across Synchrony, helping teams understand how to leverage the API Gateway and promote best practices for Microservice/SOA application development.
  • Serve as the source of knowledge for RESTful API development.
  • Assist teams in promoting their APIs to the level of Enterprise & Productize APIs for broad market consumption.
  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related degree with 3-5 years of Modern Application Development experience, or 5-7 years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • 3+ years in API development using Apigee (preferred) or another similar API Gateway product.
  • Strong technical expertise in Java Spring, Node JS, REST, SOAP, Swagger Hub (JSON/YAML).
  • Experience with Agile application development and familiarity with tools like JIRA, Bitbucket.
  • Experience with continuous integration environments and tools such as Jenkins.
  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical peers.
  • Cross‑functional team player with ability to work across a matrix organization.
  • Attention to detail in a team environment.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, and recommend actions.
  • Passionate about learning and understanding diversified business domains and technologies.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and frameworks.

Job Details

Grade/Level: 11
Salary: 115,000.00 – 200,000.00 USD annual, eligible for annual bonus based on individual and company performance. Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge. Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process.
  • Must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.
  • New hires (Level 4 – 7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before eligible to post on other roles; minimum 6 months’ time in position before posting for future non‑exempt roles; employees level 8 or greater must have at least 18 months’ time in position; internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have manager approval.
