Job description

Join to apply for the Avionics Test Engineer (Starshield) role at SpaceX.

SpaceX was founded with the belief that a future where humanity explores the stars is more exciting than one where we do not. Currently, SpaceX is developing technologies to make this possible, with the goal of enabling human life on Mars.

AVIONICS TEST ENGINEER (STARSHIELD)

Starshield leverages SpaceX’s Starlink technology and launch capabilities to support national security efforts. While Starlink is for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, focusing on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads.

As an avionics test engineer, you will design and develop test systems for all electronic hardware on our satellites. You will create test solutions from scratch and be responsible for testing and screening electronic hardware for spacecraft, ensuring safety and reliability.

We seek individuals eager to get hands-on, make critical decisions, and work with data-driven rationale. We push the boundaries of innovation through teamwork and determination.

Responsibilities
  1. Design, develop, and maintain custom test solutions for flight hardware including electronics, optics, RF antennas, and electro-mechanical hardware.
  2. Select COTS hardware and/or design custom PCBAs for signal measurement, flight-like loads, and powering units under test.
  3. Write automation software in Python to interact with test units, equipment, and documentation systems.
  4. Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and test teams to improve product reliability and yield.
  5. Root-cause test anomalies and failures to ensure understanding and mitigation.
Basic Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer or electrical engineering or related field.
  2. At least 1 year of experience in electronic hardware or software development (including academic projects or internships).
  3. Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or Embedded C/C++.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  1. Experience analyzing circuits and developing test plans.
  2. Experience with object-oriented software development.
  3. Designing and troubleshooting PCBAs.
  4. Experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, DAQs, RF spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, and signal generators.
  5. Understanding of electrical schematics, electronics manufacturing, metrology, environmental testing, and EMI/EMC.
  6. Active security clearance or ability to obtain one is preferred.
Additional Requirements
  1. Extended hours and weekend work may be required.
  2. Ability to lift heavy fixtures and harnesses.
  3. Pre-employment and random drug testing may be required for security clearance.
