Job summary

HDR is seeking a Construction Engineer with aviation project experience to support planning, coordination, execution and delivery of airport infrastructure within active environments. You will work with airport authorities, airlines, consultants and regulators to ensure safety, compliance, and minimal disruption to operations.

Ideal candidates have ~5 years in aviation or large infrastructure projects, knowledge of FAA rules, and strong scheduling, cost control, and contract administration

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or closely related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or P.Eng license recognized by the licensing board.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support aviation construction projects (terminal renovations, airfield, runway, taxiway, service roads, utilities).
  • Review drawings, specifications, phasing plans for constructability and compliance.
  • Monitor activities for schedules, budgets, safety, and quality.
  • Coordinate with airport operations to minimize disruption.
  • Plan temporary facilities, MOT, airport closures, and phased work.
  • Prepare daily reports, minutes, and performance metrics.
  • Process RFIs, submittals, change orders, pay apps, contractor claims.
  • Conduct field inspections to verify FAA/airport code compliance.
  • Assist in cost tracking, scheduling analysis, and project controls.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders (airport authorities, airlines, TSA, FAA).
  • Support commissioning, testing, punch lists, and closeout.

Position Summary

HDR is looking for a Construction Engineer with approximately five years of aviation construction experience. In this role you will be responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, execution, and delivery of airport infrastructure and facility improvement projects. The role involves managing construction activities within active airport environments while ensuring compliance with contract requirements, safety regulations, quality standards, operational constraints, and project schedules. Working closely with airport authorities, airlines, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies, the Construction Engineer helps facilitate the successful delivery of airside and landside projects with minimal disruption to airport operations

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support the execution of aviation construction projects, including terminal renovations, airfield improvements, utility relocations, runway rehabilitations, taxiway improvements, service road upgrades, baggage handling systems, and support facilities.
  • Review construction drawings, technical specifications, phasing plans, and contract documents for constructability and compliance.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to project schedules, budgets, safety requirements, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate closely with airport operations personnel to maintain uninterrupted airport operations during construction.
  • Participate in planning and implementing temporary facilities, MOT plans, airfield closures, utility shutdowns, and phased construction activities.
  • Track project progress and prepare daily reports, meeting minutes, status updates, and performance metrics.
  • Review and process RFIs, submittals, change orders, pay applications, and contractor claims.
  • Conduct field inspections to verify compliance with FAA requirements, airport standards, contract documents, and applicable codes.
  • Assist in cost tracking, forecasting, scheduling analysis, and project controls activities.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including airport authorities, airlines, TSA, FAA representatives, contractors, designers, and utility providers.
  • Support commissioning, testing, punch list completion, and project closeout activities.
  • Identify and mitigate construction risks associated with operating airports, security-sensitive areas, and passenger-facing facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Approximately 5 years of experience supporting aviation, transportation, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working on airport terminal, airfield, runway, taxiway, service road, utility, or support facility projects.
  • Familiarity with FAA Advisory Circulars, airport operational requirements, and aviation construction phasing.
  • Understanding of project controls, scheduling, cost management, and contract administration.

Required Qualifications

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Estimating & CPM Scheduling Software, and web-based document collaboration software.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
