Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Safety Engineering Analytics Lead within the AV-SEA team to drive safety analytics across the department. This leadership role reports to the AV-SEA Director and shapes strategy, KPIs, and communications for senior leadership and regulatory-facing programs.

Remote:This role is basedremotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of [Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren,Milfordor Mountain View], you are expected to report to that location three timesperweek, at minimum.

The Role

The Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFE‑ADS) department is part of GM’s Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization. Our mission is to help GM deliver trustworthy automated-driving products. As the central authority for automated driving system (ADS) safety, SAFE‑ADS brings together experts from across the company to develop and maintain a comprehensive safety case including safety performance indicators for GM’s automated‑driving technologies. GM’s vision is zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion, and autonomous vehicle safety is essential to achieving that vision.

The AV Safety Engineering Analytics (AV‑SEA) team is the resource supporting teams and stakeholders from around the company to bring a broad range of data and analytics capabilities to bear in AV safety decision making. This team maintains proficiency integrating continuously flowing data from vehicle systems, company databases, third‑party services, and federal and state agencies to inform system design and quantify driving performance.

Role Overview

This role willreportto the AV‑SEA Director. The Safety Engineering Analytics Lead will drive AV‑SEA impact across three primary dimensions:

  • Research and development program execution
  • Technical and non‑technical communications
  • Leadership,strategyand operations management,within AV-SEA and the larger SAFE ADS department.

This is a People Leader role that owns the AV-SEA strategy setting with broad latitude in approach and recommendations that are expected and relied on by senior leadership. This individual will set objectives, and KPIs that directly support GM’s safety and business goals. The leader will shape AV safety analytics direction and champion large-scale change in line with GM Behaviors, delivering critical outcomes and long‑term results.

What You’ll Do
Research and development program execution
  • Define andmaintainan AV safety analytics strategy and roadmap that connects DDT metrics, Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs), benchmarking, counterfactual modeling, and metrics to program milestones and safety cases.
  • Ensure that DDT safety metrics and benchmarking outputs are discoverable, reproducible, and traceable, with clear data lineage, assumptions, and ownership.
  • Leadmembers ofAV-SEA teaminscoping, executing, and reviewing end‑to‑end safety analyses
Technical and non‑technical communications
  • Translate complex analytic work (e.g., benchmarking, SPI roadmaps, counterfactual analyses) into clear, structured safety narratives for senior leadership, governance bodies, and cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Overseetheanalysisproductsof AV-SEA analytics activities, including internal content and external messaging in support of AV‑SEA and SAFE-ADS safety science and analytics activities.
  • Establish and steward safety messaging that aligns internal dashboards, technical design documents, safety cases, and external‑facing materials around consistent safety metrics and evidence.
  • Operate as SAFE-ADS and AV-SEA interfacetoGM communications and marketing related to safety analytics and safety performance monitoring methods.
  • Identifyopportunities for, and lead collaborative publications work, including technical white papers, conference publications, policy briefs, social media content, and external safety reports that accurately represent AV‑SEA’s work while supporting regulatory and public‑trustobjectives.
Leadership, strategy and operations management
  • Be the day‑to‑day interface between AV‑SEA and autonomy and systems engineering, validation and test, simulation,productand program management, legal, and communications to ensure safety analytics are decision‑relevant andtimely.
  • Coordinate with GPSSC teams, partner organizations, external stakeholders, and industry associationstoidentifystrategic needs, align safety‑analytics initiatives, and organize joint workstreams.
  • Represent AV‑SEA in internal review forums, safety governance meetings, and cross‑functional working groups, driving clarity on safety metrics, pass/fail thresholds, and program readiness.
  • Mentor and coach AV‑SEA team members in strategy, stakeholder engagement, and communication, helping individual contributors connect technical work to safety impact and program decisions.

  • Significant experiencein ground vehicle transportation, vehicle safety, human factors, quantification of human performance, driver support systems, autonomous systems, and validation studies for regulatory applications and other safety‑critical domains
  • Demonstrated experience designing, managing, and interpreting scientific research methods and study designs.
  • Significant experiencein applied research program planning and execution, including external contracts definition and administration.
  • Familiarity with driving performance data sources and pipelines (e.g., on‑road telemetry, crash and near‑miss data, benchmarking datasets) and how they are used to evaluate driving safety.
  • Systems thinking and safety judgment across technical, operational, and organizational dimensions of AV safety.
  • Strong execution and follow‑through on multi‑year safety analytics and research programs, including documentation, review, and hand‑off.
Technical and non‑technical communications
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex analytic work into clear, precise narratives for technical, executive, regulatory, and public audiences.
  • Demonstrated success leading and co‑authoring technical publications, white papers, policy briefs, social media, and external safety reports, including co‑authored work with internal and external partners.
  • Demonstrated strength in technical editing, navigating the peer‑review process, marketingand communications, in a technical or safety‑critical context.
Leadership, strategy and operations management
  • Ability to define long‑range roadmaps, integrating external and internal expectations, connecting near‑term deliverables to a coherent multi‑year strategic vision.
  • Innovative, forward‑lookingand applied problem solver with the ability to build teams of a similar mindset.
  • Experience leading complex, cross functional programs or initiatives spanning engineering, product, safety, legal/policy, and communications stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to clarify ownership and dependencies, and drive progress in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments.
  • Experience recruiting, developing, mentoring,retentingand coaching technical staff.
  • Ability to lead through influence across organizational boundaries and levels.
  • Proficiencywith budgeting, forecasting, and resource planning.
  • Demonstratedproficiencyin internal and externalrelationshipand partnership development.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Master's degree in Human Factors Engineering, Experimental Psychology, Quantitative Psychology, or similar.
  • 10 years of business experience including strategic planning, relationship development, developing and leading teams executing technical or scientific programs.
  • 8+ years of experience directing programs for industry and government in the domain of ground transportation safety and automated driving systems.
