Job summary

University of Delaware is hiring an Auxiliary Security Officer to perform uniformed security duties across campus locations in Newark, DE. The role requires monitoring building access, ensuring safety, and responding to incidents during mostly evening shifts.

Under general supervision, you will protect the campus community, enforce procedures, and coordinate with police when necessary. A high school diploma and the ability to drive are required; First Aid/CPR training will be provided.

The University of Delaware Police Department is charged withproviding a safe and secure environment for our campus community.All members of the University Police Department are committed toproviding proactive, progressive and professional law enforcementservices. Department staff are trained to understand the pressuresand needs of students, faculty and staff. The department’s missionis not only to enforce the law but also to educate students,faculty, staff and the visiting public as to how, in cooperationwith the police, they can be better prepared to enhance theirpersonal safety. Our officers strive to develop and maintain apositive relationship with students, faculty and staff to ensurethe safety and cooperation of the entire campus community andperform their duties in support of the educational mission of theUniversity of Delaware.

Context of Job:

Under general supervision, serves as a uniformed member of theUniversity of Delaware Police Department performing routine anddiverse duties at university locations throughout the State ofDelaware. Requiring independent judgment in the application ofprescribed procedures and methods related to university services.Promotes safety and security among the University community; takescorrective action as required in accordance with established rules,regulations and procedures; requires the exercise of tactful andassertive interpersonal communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities:
Building Security:
  • Securing academic buildings at designated closing times on adaily basis.
  • Un-securing academic buildings on weekends/holidays.
  • Provide exterior/interior building lockouts.
  • Assists with clearing occupants from specific academicbuildings at closing times.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED, and one yearexperience, or any equivalent combination of education andexperience which provides the required knowledge, skills, andabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing andinteract well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles.
  • Able to be trained in First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and preparereports.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow specific instructionsand procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Skill in providing protection services to individuals oncampus.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information toappropriate personnel.
  • Skill in utilizing building security and lock systems andprocedures.
  • Ability to use computing equipment related to the UniversityPolice Department operations.
Special requirements:
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED with three years ofrelated experience, prior law enforcement experience preferred, orequivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must also pass a comprehensive background investigationincluding driving record, financial status and criminalhistory.
