The Support Engineering Team ensures the continued safe and autonomous operation of the May Mobility fleet as well as aiding the autonomy team to advance our roadmap. The role of the Autonomy Support Engineers (ASEs) is to develop a broad expertise across the entire vehicle system and play a critical role as the first line of defense for remote debugging, investigating problems, and tracking issues within the fleet. The ASEs also contribute to ongoing development work through analysis of vehicle testing and curation and maintenance of vehicle datasets.

Within this team, the Autonomy Support Engineer II will play a crucial role in validating the safety and functionality of our autonomous vehicle systems through comprehensive event review. They may also create simulation scenarios that help evaluate system functionality. This role is responsible for assigning observable cause for issues from the field in order to support the efforts of our Release team, Operational sites, and Autonomy Engineers. It is the team of Autonomy Support Engineers that triage the most important issues and bring them to the Autonomy development teams for resolution.

For this role, the candidate would work remotely most of the time with reliable internet access and no limit on data upload/download quantity.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Investigate reported fleet issues for root cause, track and categorize common issues, and escape when necessary to the Autonomy Software Engineering teams, which includes extensive reviewing of logged events from our Autonomous vehicles
  • Help build the company’s knowledge base for site staff and other Autonomy Support Engineers
  • Curate and manage datasets for Autonomy software development
  • Analyze testing data to assist in Autonomy software development
  • Aid in early autonomy software testing through simulation scenario development
  • Provide insights and patterns for cases that are preventing autonomy and escalating as necessary
  • Plan and create simulation scenarios that test for improved behavior with an emphasis on effective and efficient test plans
  • Analyze and report simulation test outcomes, providing high quality and meaningful data analysis to assist in identifying software progressions and regressions
  • Learn the self driving system (autonomous system functionality, subsystem behavior, error messages, etc.)
  • Identify issues with tooling and suggest and implement process improvements
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively identify suboptimal vehicle behavior utilizing logs collected by the Fleet and Testing teams

  • Discretion and integrity when handling confidential or sensitive information
  • Ability to understand and relate to the agile startup and engineering mindset
  • Proficient with Linux scripts and terminal usage
  • Ability to compose technical documentation such as how‑to and debugging guides
  • Ability to see patterns in data and log review to classify similarities and differences in cases
  • Ability to ask critical questions and dig deeper than just the obvious answer
  • Having the ability to understand the nuances and limitations of the vehicle’s behavior will be key to success in this role
Qualifications and Experience

Candidates most successful in this role typically hold the following qualifications or comparable knowledge or experience:

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (preferred); however, some college experience or similar relevant career experience is acceptable
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability in troubleshooting, keen attention to detail
  • Basic to Intermediate Python coding and Bash scripting skills
  • Basic to Intermediate level SQL and/or JQL experience
  • Proficient with Linux scripts and terminal usage
  • Basic to Intermediate C/C++ skills for debugging and code analysis
  • Understanding of BI Tools (e.g. AWS Quicksight, Tableau, Looker, Plotly Dash)
  • Understanding of simulation scenario creation and software testing criteria
  • Comfortable continuously learning new softwares and workflows
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
Desirable
  • Intermediate to Advanced Python coding skills and Bash scripting skills
  • Intermediate to Advanced C/C++ skills for debugging and code analysis
  • Intermediate to Advanced level SQL and/or JQL experience
  • Experience working with autonomous vehicles
  • Familiarity with a start‑up environment and pace of business
  • Experience analyzing, evaluating and transforming data from multiple sources
  • Basic to Intermediate level BI Tool experience (e.g. AWS Quicksight, Tableau, Looker, Plotly Dash)
  • Familiarity with Applied Intuition simulation software suite is a plus

Salary Range: $98,000 – $140,000 USD
