Job summary

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) offers a 12-week PhD Research Internship within the EPIC team of the Human Interactive Driving division. You will conduct original research at the intersection of machine learning and autonomous driving, focusing on world modeling, representation learning, and evaluation in closed-loop simulations.

You will collaborate with TRI scientists, prototype ideas, and contribute to publications.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Robotics, ML, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• Strong background in ML: deep learning, generative models, RL, or probabilistic modeling.
• Hands-on with world models, model-based RL, 3D reconstruction or sensor fusion, and large-scale simulation for robotics.

Responsibilities

• Conduct original research in world modeling, multi-agent interaction, RL, perception, or sim-to-real transfer.
• Collaborate with full-time researchers on design, training, and evaluation of learning-based driving systems.
• Develop and evaluate prototypes in closed-loop simulations and on autonomous driving hardware when possible.
• Present findings through internal talks and aim for top-tier publications.
• Integrate and work with large-scale open-source and internal datasets.
