Job summary

The City of Coral Gables seeks an experienced Automotive Technician to perform maintenance and repairs on a diverse fleet including autos, trucks, boats, and emergency vehicles. Work is overseen by an Automotive Coordinator and requires precise diagnostics and hands-on repair skills.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent, 3 years journeyman-level experience, and CDL Class B with ASE certification preferred. Tools furnished; CDL may be required within 120 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
• ASE certification preferred.
• CDL Class B certification required or to be obtained within allowed period.
• Three years journeyman level experience in automotive and construction equipment repairs.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and diagnose a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment to identify problems.
• Perform routine maintenance and major repairs on gasoline, diesel, and hybrid systems.
• Troubleshoot brakes, transmissions, electrical systems, and HVAC components.
• Diagnose and repair ABS, steering, suspension, and alignments.
• Provide roadside assistance and coordinate with the Automotive Coordinator on costs and parts.
• Prepare and update maintenance records and comply with safety regulations.

Job description

Performs skilled preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, trucks, boats, construction and heavy equipment as well as emergency vehicles. Work is assigned, reviewed by inspection, and performed under the direction of an Automotive Coordinator.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

• Inspects and tests vehicles, makes visual and operational inspections of vehicles to diagnose problems and fixes problems affecting a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment such as, automobiles, passenger buses, police and fire specialized equipment, Commercial Grade Marine vessels and Vessel trailer repairs, general trucks, public works construction and maintenance equipment, etc.
• Participates in the widest variety of automotive maintenance and repairs from minor work to major repairs.
• Troubleshoots diesel and gasoline motors, transmissions, universal joins, differentials, PTO’s, Air and Hydraulic brakes.
• Troubleshoots and performs maintenance on Electric Vehicles and Hybrid vehicles
• Diagnose and repair Anti-Lock brake systems
• Perform front end and four wheel alignments
• Perform extensive electrical diagnosis review Electrical diagrams and schematics for troubleshooting electrical problems
• Diagnose and repair of Air conditioning systems
• Diagnose and repair Suspension and Steering Systems
• Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs automotive electrical components such as starters, generators, distributors, voltage regulators, etc.
• Troubleshoots, repairs/replace, balance and installs wheels and tires.
• Provides roadside assistance to operators of City vehicles and tows vehicles to garage as needed.
• Consults with Automotive Coordinator to determine costs of repairs and obtain technical assistance.
• Delivers vehicles to outside vendors and retrieves vehicles when work is completed.
• Interprets and acts upon work orders.
• Prepares and updates maintenance records and signs off on work orders.
• Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
• Conforms with all safety rules which includes wearing and using all appropriate safety equipment.
• Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles as assigned.
• Performs other related tasks as required.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum three (3) years at the journeyman level in the skilled repair of automotive and construction equipment.

ASE certification preferred.

Valid Florida Driver's License with CDL Class B certification.

CDL requirement may be waived for up to 120 days but must be obtained by the end of the 120 days for continued employment as long as employee has a valid Florida Driver's License.

Must furnish own tools and repair equipment.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.
