Job summary

Swagelok in Highland Heights, OH, is seeking an Automation Technician on the 2nd shift to support and troubleshoot control systems for manufacturing and assembly processes.

The role focuses on diagnostics, installation and start-up of new equipment, and managing automation software, with opportunities to contribute to new initiatives and collaborate with engineering teams to improve efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 2 years of relevant automation experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in automation and controls engineering.
  • Manufacturing, assembly, and/or warehouse experience preferred.
  • Proficient communication, programming and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and resolves automation system issues across electrical, mechanical, and software.
  • Modifies and reverse engineers existing automation systems.
  • Performs routine maintenance on automated equipment.
  • Maintains documentation and reports system performance.
  • Supports the development of automated system solutions, including electrical, controls, robotic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborates with engineers to program PLCs, robots, and vision systems.
  • Documents system specifications for new equipment installations and testing.
  • Applies engineering principles to determine root causes of equipment failures.
  • Communicates with 3rd party automation vendors for quotations and integration.
  • Ensures safety standards and regulations compliance for automated systems.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements and downtime reduction.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with Operations, IT, Sourcing, and other stakeholders.
  • Participates in training to stay current with automation technologies.

Position Summary:

The Automation Technician is responsible for supporting and troubleshooting control systems for manufacturing and assembly processes. The role focuses on diagnostics and support for new equipment installation and start-up, as well as managing all technical automation software. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to new equipment and automation initiatives. Individuals will also participate in engineering projects, providing support, continuously improving processes, and problem-solving in areas of technical expertise. This individual should have a strong commitment to developing technical competencies in a collaborative work environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots and resolves automation system issues, including electrical, mechanical, and software problems.
  • Modifies and reverse engineers existing automation systems.
  • Performs routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automated equipment.
  • Maintains comprehensive documentation and report system performance regularly.
  • Supports the development of automated system solutions, including electrical, controls, robotic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborates with engineers and peers to program PLCs, robots, and vision systems, integrating automation solutions into manufacturing and assembly equipment.
  • Understands product and process requirements to document system specifications, including design, installation, and testing for new automated equipment and systems.
  • Applies engineering theory, practices, and principles to perform failure analysis to determine root cause of equipment failures and conduct machinery performance evaluations.
  • Helps with technical communication and quotations with 3rd party automation / integrator vendors.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations for automated systems and equipment.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements and system optimizations to enhance production efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with other groups such as Operations, IT, Sourcing, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Participates in training and development activities to stay current with new automation technologies and industry best practices.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED with 2 years of relevant experience; OR a 2-year associate's degree in a related field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering Technology, Robotics, Mechatronics, Controls, or other automation fields).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in automation and controls engineering.
  • Manufacturing, assembly, and/or warehouse experience preferred.
  • Some technical courses or on the job training in related field.
  • Proficient user of moderately technical tools.
  • Recognized as resource in areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrates proficient communication, programming and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good computer and typical office software skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
