Job summary

Crescent Energy seeks an Automation Technician II to install, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and commission automation and control systems across oil and gas production facilities. This role supports safe operations of PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, instrumentation, and communications, coordinating with Operations, Engineering, Electrical, and Instrumentation teams.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in oil and gas field automation, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to travel to field sites.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3–5 years of oil and gas field automation experience.
• Ability to troubleshoot PLC, RTU, SCADA in field environments.
• Working knowledge of PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, HMI software, telemetry.
• Ability to read electrical diagrams, P&IDs, and control schematics.

The Automation Technician II i ndependently installs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests, and commissions automation and control systems across oil and gas production facilities. This role supports reliable and safe operations of PLCs, RTUs, SCADA systems, instrumentation, and communications infrastructure, while coordinating with Operations, Engineering, Electrical, and Instrumentation teams. The technician resolves complex field issues, performs approved system configuration changes, and maintains complete technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, test, and commission PLCs, RTUs, SCADA components, instrumentation, and related communications equipment at field production sites and facilities.
• Independently diagnose and repair complex automation, control, instrumentation, and communications issues remotely and on-site; use structured troubleshooting to identify root causes and corrective actions.
• Perform approved PLC, RTU, HMI, alarm, and communications configuration changes in accordance with established change-management, cybersecurity, and safety procedures.
• Coordinate with Electrical and Instrumentation teams to verify proper sensor, transmitter, actuator, control-panel, and field wiring installation.
• Conduct routine inspections, functional testing, calibration, and preventive maintenance to maintain system uptime, accuracy, and performance.
• Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot pressure, flow, level, temperature, and other field instruments and transmitters.
• Support the integration of new wells, equipment, and facilities into existing SCADA platforms, including validation of point mapping, alarms, and remote communications.
• Maintain radios, modems, cellular gateways, and other remote-access communications equipment used for telemetry and operational visibility.
• Document work performed, update control logic diagrams and system records, maintain configuration backups, and close assigned work orders accurately and promptly.
• Ensure automation work complies with applicable safety, environmental, operational, and regulatory requirements; promptly communicate conditions that require Engineering or Operations escalation.
• Provide field-level technical guidance to Automation Technician I personnel and contractors as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three to five years of experience in oil and gas field automation, industrial controls, instrumentation, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot PLC, RTU, SCADA, instrumentation, and communications issues independently in field environments.
• Working knowledge of PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, HMI software, telemetry, alarm management, and remote monitoring systems.
• Working knowledge of Modbus, OPC, TCP/IP, and common industrial communications methods.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, P&IDs, loop drawings, and control logic schematics.
• Ability to work independently in remote field locations, prioritize work safely, and communicate clearly with operations and technical teams.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to field sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical certification or associate degree in instrumentation, automation, electrical systems, or a related discipline.
• Experience with PLC and RTU platforms such as Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Emerson ROC, or Schneider Electric.
• Experience performing instrument calibration, loop checks, commissioning, and start-up support.
• Experience working within formal safety, permit-to-work, change-management, or cybersecurity processes.

Work Environment

This position supports field production sites and facilities and requires travel to remote locations as operational needs require. Work may include both on-site and remote troubleshooting in coordination with Operations and Engineering.
