Job description

Coated Products North America (CPNA) is part of BlueScope, a global supplier of metal coating and painting products. The Automation Engineer role is located in Spokane, Kalama, or Tacoma, WA.

Purpose

Direct design & installation of new or replacement robotic and automation equipment, develop reliability standards, maintain engineering drawings, and oversee daily maintenance activities. Provide support during breakdowns, line shutdowns, and other maintenance needs.

Responsibilities
  • Act as project leader on procurement, installation, commissioning, and training for new equipment.
  • Lead or assist in feasibility studies for new robotic or automation equipment.
  • Direct maintenance, reliability, and performance activities to meet required targets.
  • Train operations and maintenance personnel on system operations and maintenance.
  • Research and investigate new technologies to reduce costs and improve effectiveness.
  • Assist other maintenance activities across CPNA as required.
  • Ensure all systems have secure protection protocols consistent with BlueScope standards.
  • Support CPNA digital and customer experience initiatives to provide integrated technology solutions.
Technical Ability
  • Effectively manage projects from conception to completion, including budgeting, design, manpower allocation, timeline development, documentation, and instruction.
  • Interpret extensive technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form and solve problems using principles of mechanics, electricity, and fluid dynamics.
  • Understand operation of moderately complex tools, machines, and systems.
  • Operate and understand computer applications and systems such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and SAP.
  • Work knowledge of modern OT security, networking, and integration technologies.
Other Requirements
  • Demonstrate behaviors that contribute to effective teamwork.
  • Maintain a safe work history and perform safety, health, and environmental inspections.
  • Work extended hours, travel at limited notice, and for extended periods.
  • Manage time to follow production plans and schedules.
  • Prefer experience with Microsoft operating systems, security, networking, and cloud (Azure) products.
Education & Experience

Minimum: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 3 years of automation/robotics/mechatronics project work, record of automation project implementation from feasibility to handover.

Preferred: 5 years of automation/robotics/mechatronics project work, heavy manufacturing experience with successful cost and performance outcomes, P.E. certification.

Salary & Benefits

Expected pay range: $107,100.00 – $130,300.00 annually, depending on experience, skill set, and qualifications. Eligible for a targeted annual bonus of 15%, health and welfare benefits, and 401(k) match per BlueScope policies.
