Job summary

Gills Point S Tire & Auto is seeking an experienced Level 1 Mechanic to diagnose, maintain, and repair a range of vehicle systems in a team-focused shop in Vermont. You will handle brake, steering, charging, and electrical work, perform tune-ups, and maintain thorough service records.

The right candidate will have 2‑4 years of hands-on repair experience, strong diagnostic skills, and a commitment to quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Automotive technical training preferred.
  • 2-4 years of professional automotive repair experience.
  • AES Certifications A4 (Steering & Suspension) A5 (Brakes) preferred or willingness to earn with company support.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stand, and work in a fast-paced shop environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning as automotive technology evolves.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical systems including brake, steering & suspension, charging, and electrical components.
  • Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs with proper documentation.
  • Safely lift and support vehicles and use shop equipment correctly.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and collaborate with Service Advisors and other technicians.

Level 1 Mechanic

As a Level 1 Mechanic, you'll play a key role in keeping our customers safely on the road. You'll perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a variety of vehicle systems while working in a professional, team-oriented environment with stable hours, ongoing training, and opportunities for advancement.

What You'll Do

As a Level 1 Mechanic, you'll be responsible for diagnosing and repairing a variety of mechanical systems, including:

Brake Systems
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and replace brake components including pads, rotors, calipers, hydraulic systems, and brake lines.
  • Perform brake system maintenance to ensure safe vehicle operation.
Steering & Suspension
  • Diagnose and repair steering and suspension components including shocks, struts, control arms, tie rods, steering racks, and power steering systems.
  • Perform steering inspections and suspension repairs to improve ride quality and vehicle safety.
Charging & Electrical Systems
  • Diagnose charging system concerns.
  • Test and replace alternators, batteries, voltage regulators, and related electrical components.
  • Perform basic electrical troubleshooting.
Tune-Ups & Preventative Maintenance
  • Replace spark plugs, ignition components, air filters, fuel filters, and cooling system components.
  • Perform routine maintenance services to improve vehicle performance and reliability.
General Mechanical Responsibilities
  • Perform vehicle inspections and accurately identify repair needs.
  • Safely lift and support vehicles using shop equipment.
  • Maintain repair documentation and service records.
  • Properly use and maintain diagnostic equipment, hand tools, lifts, and specialty equipment.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and shop standards.
  • Communicate professionally with customers when needed and work collaboratively with Service Advisors and fellow technicians.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Automotive technical training preferred.
  • 2-4 years of professional automotive repair experience.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing:
  • Brake systems
  • Steering and suspension
  • Charging systems
  • Basic engine performance concerns
  • Tune-ups and preventative maintenance
  • ASE Certifications A4 (Steering & Suspension) and A5 (Brakes) are preferred, or willingness to earn certifications with company support.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stand, and work in a fast-paced shop environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning as automotive technology evolves.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 75 pounds, and safely operating shop equipment while working in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be able to perform work both inside the shop and outdoors in varying weather conditions while following all company safety policies.
