Job summary

PEN America, a nonprofit organization working at the intersection of literature and human rights, seeks a dynamic and results-oriented program manager of U.S. author safety to build out programming to support writers, their allies, and the wider literary community amidst escalating attacks on the freedom to write, read, and learn in the U.S.

This is a full-time, union-eligible position based at PEN America’s New York City headquarters and reports to the senior manager of safety training and

Qualifications

• 3–5 years in publishing, literary nonprofits, communications, education, or digital safety.
• Experience with digital/physical safety, online harassment, or trauma-informed care.
• Public speaking and teaching experience; event organization preferred.
• Strong networking and relationship-building abilities.
• Organizational skills and independent problem solving.

Responsibilities

• Build, manage, and grow safety training for authors and the literary community.
• Develop partnerships with literary associations, publishers, libraries, and universities.
• Conduct trainings and present at conferences and events.
• Develop safety resources with cross-team collaboration.
• Provide trauma-informed safety support and coordinate with PEN teams.
