The Food Safety Auditor is responsible for conducting audits in facilities (and farms for SQF) according to the audit scheme and SCS protocol. Auditors travel to client sites, perform inspections, assess compliance, review corrective actions, and submit audit reports for review and certification.

This is a contract position. SQF is available across the US; BRC is open to all Canadian Geographic Regions and US Coastal Regions: North & South East (e.g., FL, VA, Carolinas, DE, NY/NJ/CT), CA, PNW (OR or WA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Audit Coordination

  • Schedule and confirm audit dates with clients
  • Prepare and send audit plans according to protocols
  • Arrange travel, accommodations, and transportation; submit expense reports

Audit Services

  • Follow all quality and conduct standards
  • Conduct audits using checklists and tools
  • Maintain positive client relationships and respond to inquiries
  • Submit complete and accurate reports within deadlines
  • Maintain thorough client records

Program Quality and Compliance

  • Attend training to stay qualified for conducting audits; keep training records
  • Stay updated on applicable regulations and standards
  • Prepare clients for audits by providing required plans

Qualifications (Minimum requirements per scheme or QMS)

  • Familiarity with third-party certification processes
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and database systems
  • Willingness to travel up to 75%, primarily overnight across US and Canada

Education and Experience

SQF

  • Degree in food science, technology, or related field
  • 40-hour Lead Auditor training (e.g., Exemplar Global, IRCA)
  • 2-day HACCP training
  • 5-day SQF Lead Auditor training
  • 15 hours of professional development
  • At least 5 years of full-time experience in the food industry

BRC

  • Degree in food-related or bioscience discipline, or equivalent experience (10+ years industry experience may substitute)
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience
  • 2-day HACCP training
  • Lead Auditor course from a third party and current BRC food safety standard training or equivalent
  • 40-hour quality management system training

Physical Requirements

This role involves 25% office work and 75% fieldwork. Must be able to sit and keyboard for long periods, communicate effectively, and travel to sites via plane and car. Physical activities include standing, walking, and carrying equipment up to 20 lbs, sometimes on rugged terrain.
