Hamilton County Government is seeking an auditor to perform internal audits across offices and programs, emphasizing internal control and accounting review. You will test compliance, prepare financial statements, and support departments in financial analyses and reporting.
The role requires knowledge of GASB and FASB, plus the ability to supervise audit workflow, train clerks, and produce timely results. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent with related work experience is required.
Under general supervision, performs internal audits of offices of elected officials, county offices, departments, agencies, and programs that operate under Hamilton County Government with emphasis on internal control and accounting systems for review of effectiveness of the programs, activities, and financial audits.

Performs annual audits of the offices of elected officials and tests the financial and procedural activities performed by the offices for compliance with federal and state laws, codes, county resolutions, policies, and procedures; compiles financial information into financial statements format for publication; assists the county offices by recording accruals and corrections; performs analytical analysis and reviews of internal control systems.
Provides assistance to the offices of elected officials, departments, offices, agencies, and programs of Hamilton County government in financial and technical support; conducts annual audits of hotels/motels including reviews of the organization’s revenue records, method of calculation and reporting of tax to the County Trustee; performs other audits, reviews, or investigations.
Utilizes Auditing Standards and Financial Accounting Standards in the analysis and process and procedural methods to ensure accurate audits; utilizes auditing programs to direct the flow of the work process; completes all assigned work within required guide and timelines; assigns and directs the flow of work by utilizing audit clerks; reviews and approves work assigned to audit clerks; Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements.
Knowledge of internal control and financial systems.
Knowledge of sample sizes and stratification of the samples.
Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
Knowledge of research and analysis methods and procedures.
Skill in reading, interpreting, understanding, and applying Federal rules and regulations, Hamilton County Policies and Procedures.
Skill accurately utilizing auditing and accounting procedures and programs.
Skill reviewing computerized internal control and financial systems.
Skill accurately researching, reviewing, and analyzing public financial records.
Skill reviewing operational practices and procedures for effective utilization of programs and services.
Skill utilizing verbal and written communication in the development of correspondence, reports, and records.
Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a closely related field, from an accredited institution and one (1) year of direct work experience in the field of accounting. A valid driver’s license is required.
OR
An Associate’s Degree in Accounting or a closely related field, from an accredited institution and three (3) years of direct work experience in the field of accounting. A valid driver’s license is required.
OR
The equivalent of a high school diploma and five (5) years of direct work experience in the field of accounting. A valid driver’s license is required.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is preferred.
Any of the national financial/audit certifications are preferred: CPA, CIA, CFE, or CGFM.
Excessive use of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.
Work requires long hours of attention reviewing detailed fiscal and legal documents. Work also requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, walking and occasional driving. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Excessive keyboarding required.
