Job Description

The Waycross Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is seeking to fill an Assistant Public Defender position. This position can be filled at the APD 1, 2, 3, or 4 level, depending on experience. Primary duties will be representation of indigent criminal defendants in the Superior Courts of the Waycross Judicial Circuit. Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position. Experience in all areas of criminal defense is preferred. The chosen applicant will be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia and must have a strong commitment to indigent criminal defense. The person selected for this position will be an employee of the State of Georgia. Information about state employment benefits may be found at http://team.georgia.gov.

Description of Duties
  • Zealously represents indigent clients at all appropriate stages of the criminal process, consistent with the attorney's assigned division.
  • Evaluates each case for appropriate referrals to accountability courts, diversion programs, and social services.
  • Experienced attorneys provide training, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced attorneys.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License).--Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause
