Superior Court of Pennsylvania is seeking an appellate attorney to support the Central Legal Staff. The role requires exceptional legal research and writing, with the ability to work independently and in a statewide team, meeting deadlines. Primary locations include Harrisburg, Philadelphia or Pittsburgh with hybrid telework after six months.

Minimum qualifications include a J.D. from an ABA-accredited school, 3–5 years as an appellate law clerk, and active PA Supreme Court admission.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from ABA-accredited law school required.
  • 3–5 years’ experience as an appellate law clerk.
  • Admitted to and in active standing before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities

  • Review docketing statements, motions, opinions in Superior Court and certified records.
  • Review appellate briefs, certified records, and court dockets.
  • Research legal and procedural issues presented on appeal.
  • Draft memoranda, opinions, orders, and bench memos as assigned.
  • Review trial court dockets for jurisdictional issues and other pre-merits concerns.
  • Review petitions for permission to appeal; prepare memoranda and recommendations.
  • Prepare summaries, recommendations, and draft orders for Motions Panel review.
  • Assist Judges and chambers in resolving civil and criminal matters.
  • Edit team members’ work and collaborate with the Superior Court Prothonotary’s office.

This position requires exceptional legal research and writing skills for work performed with the Superior Court of Pennsylvania’s Central Legal Staff. This individual must possess the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a statewide team, with the ability to consistently meet deadlines. The attorney will handle matters relating to civil and criminal law and work closely with various judicial chambers and Judges.
