Job summary

Deerfield Academy is seeking an Athletic Trainer for a fall–spring leave replacement, based in Deerfield, MA. Responsibilities include clinical coverage for practices and games, emergency care, and coordination of sports medicine services for students.

The candidate will manage injury documentation, assist in prevention programs, and support nutrition education while maintaining facilities and supplies. Housing may be available on campus for the right candidate.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in science and athletic training is required.
  • Registered and certified athletic trainer with licensure in Massachusetts, including NATA.
  • Certified and current in BLS.

Responsibilities

  • Attend scheduled team practices and home/away games as needed.
  • Provide emergency care and consult with medical director as warranted.
  • Maintain records of injuries, treatments and rehabilitation.
  • Organize and run a weekly sports medicine clinic for student access to specialists.
  • Assist in planning a comprehensive athletic injury prevention program.

Job description

Deerfield Academy, a private coeducational boarding school founded in 1797 and annually serving approximately 650 students grades 9-12, seeks an Athletic Trainer with a start date of approximately November 1, 2026 - April 1, 2027 during Fall - Spring Terms as a leave replacement.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Athletic Training and under the direction of the Director of Medical Services, the Athletic Trainer provides individual and team-based athletic training services to the school community, in coordination with Deerfield’s allied health team and athletics program. It is possible, though not guaranteed, that we will be able to provide on-campus housing for the appropriate candidate.

The candidate will:

  • Provide athletic training services to our school community including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions, as necessary.
  • Provide emergency care and consult with the medical director as clinically warranted.
  • Keep current records of injuries, treatments and rehabilitation for proper documentation.
  • Assist in organizing and running a weekly sports medicine clinic to enable students weekly access to orthopedic sports medicine specialists.
  • Aid with the planning and implementation of a comprehensive athletic injury prevention program to limit both acute and chronic athletic injuries.
  • Administrative responsibilities include:
  • Ordering and inventory control of athletic supplies to ensure proper stocking of necessary items.
  • Maintaining the athletic training room to ensure orderly appearance, smooth operation of the facility and adherence to standard health care codes.
  • Coordinating and providing general outreach and education for students, employees and departments regarding healthy eating and nutrition.
  • Perform other duties as requested
Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who exhibit excellence as a faculty member and who can help develop in students the fundamental learning traits outlined in The Deerfield Student and A Framework For Schools . Candidates must be prepared to fully engage in the activities and less formal spaces that help define a strong residential educational community. Additionally, candidates for this position will possess the following specific attributes/qualifications:

  • Masters’ Degree Science & Athletic Training
  • 3-5 years of experience working as a certified athletic trainer
  • Registered and certified Athletic Trainer with licensure in Massachusetts, including NATA
  • Certified and current in BLS
  • Experience working with adolescent population
  • Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information
  • Ability to effectively work, communicate and contribute on a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent written, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated technical expertise including Microsoft Office suite, and a capacity for rapid acquisition of skills in the use of the Electronic Health Record system in use at the Health Center
  • Interest in and demonstrated skill working with adolescents
  • Demonstrated multicultural competency and commitment to inclusivity
  • Detail-oriented
  • A sense of humor

Salary Range

$25,000 - $40,000 Dependent upon experience and finalized duties
