Job summary

Journey Community Schools is seeking an Athletic Coach to lead student athletes, instilling discipline, teamwork, and ethical conduct. The role emphasizes safety, strategic coaching, and developing core athletic skills.

You will coordinate practices, manage equipment and budgets with the Athletic Director, ensure eligibility and medical clearances, and maintain open communication with parents and staff to support student success.

Responsibilities

  • Send information/correspondence to players and parents.
  • Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes, and assistant coaches.
  • Develop schedules with Athletic Director or Principal’s designee.
  • Manage equipment: ordering, inventory, repair and cleaning.
  • Ensure compliance with SCIAA, TSSAA or TMSSA codes for Journey Community Schools.
  • Ensure yearly physicals and insurance coverage for each athlete.
  • Monitor attendance, behavior and academic progress of athletes.
  • Supervise and direct activities of assistant coaches.
  • Distribute rosters, contest schedules, and locations to players and guardians.

Job description

The Athletic Coach instructs student athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. S/he also instructs students to formulate moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-d confidence.

What You Will Do:
  • Organization and Communication Send information/correspondence to players and parents
  • Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes, and assistant coaches
  • Work with Athletic Director or Principal’s designee to develop non-league schedule and confirm league schedule
  • Develop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the team
  • Administrative Work with Athletic Director to prepare budget for the sport being coached
  • Manage the ordering, inventory, repairing, and cleaning of all sport-specific equipment
  • Implement and follow all SCIAA, TSSAA OR TMSSA , and athletic codes, rules, and philosophies for Journey Community Schools
  • Ensure completion of yearly physical exam and insurance coverage for each athlete
  • Work with Athletic Director, Counselors, and Business Manager to confirm both residential and academic eligibility of each athlete
  • Distribute team rosters, contest schedules, and contest locations to all players and parents/guardians
  • Monitor athlete class attendance, behavior, and academic progress
  • Work with Athletic Director to establish set practice times and locations
  • Supervise and direct activities of any assistant coaches
  • Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the media
  • Work with Athletic Director to determine and procure any team awards
  • Training and Preparation of Athletes Hold fair and equitable tryouts
  • Provide all team rules and regulations to team members
  • Provide training on all rules and skills of the specific sport
  • Provide training on physical conditioning and injury prevention
  • Institute, teach, and monitor all drills
  • Provide appropriate sport specific tactical training
  • Provide positive motivation
  • Discipline players as necessary in accordance with team, JCS, SCIAA, TSSAA OR TMSSA
  • Select, direct, and monitor activities of any team managers
  • Confer with medical personnel for proper approval prior to allowing any injured player to return to athletic activity
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Journey Community Schools mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned
What You Will Bring:
  1. Required knowledge, skills & abilities: Strong oral and written communication skills Ability to work in a positive way with students, parents, and community members Knowledge of district regulations and guidelines for each event Ability to lift, move, and set-up event equipment Knowledge or ability to learn how to set-up and use sound system and scoreboards Ability to work with coaches, officials and administrators to assure a safe environment for participants and spectators Ability to provide leadership that assures student and spectator safety in emergency situations
  2. Minimum educational level: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree Valid Tennessee Teacher Certification Preferred CPR & AED Certified
  3. Experience required: Experience working with students and community at athletic events required. Coaching experience preferred.
