Job description

Reporting to the Area Manager/Regional Program Director, the CDL Program Director provides leadership for the CDL Program. As the subject matter expert, the Director delivers curriculum development, implements training, hires and supervises Driver Trainers, and supports the trainee population. The role includes student advising, monitoring academic progress, and continuous improvement of the program.

This position is offered as a 10‑month assignment from January through November, with a scheduled break until the next cohort. The Director may be required to travel for training with Ancora Training contracted staff.

Key Responsibilities

I. Provides Services to Students

• Supplies academic advising and counseling; refers to external resources when needed.
• Leads retention initiatives for students facing barriers.
• Maintains regular contact and posts office hours to respond to student inquiries.
• Refers non‑academic problems to appropriate staff.
• Tracks and follows up on student absences to address attendance issues.
• Keeps records of all student interactions.
• Monitors Driver Trainer communications with students; makes follow‑up outreach.
• Identifies students requiring tutoring.

II. Oversees Quality of Curriculum, Instructional Materials, Equipment, and Facilities

• Serves as the subject matter expert on the academic curriculum.
• Provides feedback during curriculum development and revision.
• Implements new and revised curricula.
• Contributes to master scheduling for course sequencing, room assignments, and Trainer assignments.

III. Oversees Faculty Performance and Development

• Orients, supervises, mentors, and supports new Driver Trainers.
• Leads faculty meetings to improve instruction.
• Informs all departments of program trends.
• Records professional development activities.
• Maintains knowledge of federal and state regulations.
• Prepares government and agency reports.
• Assists in evaluating student questionnaire data and facilitates faculty conferences.
• Collaborates with peers to coordinate interdepartmental activities.
• Performs all duties of a full‑time Driver Trainer.

Experience and Education Required

• High school diploma or GED.
• CDL license.
• Minimum 3 years of post‑secondary instruction experience.
• Minimum 5 years of industry experience in instruction.
• Minimum 2 years of supervisory or management experience.
• Ability to qualify as a CDL Driver / Driver Trainer.
• Knowledge of faculty development, including delivery methods and reporting.
• Motivation, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching.
• Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners.

Experience and Education Preferred

• Associate’s degree or higher, or documented specialized competency in instruction.
• 5 years of post‑secondary teaching experience.
• 10 years of instruction experience.
• 3 years of supervisory experience.
• Previous academic program director experience.
• Experience in student guidance or related fields.
• Working knowledge of federal/state regulations.

Physical Demands

• Mobility & balance required for frequent cab entry/exit and vehicle inspections.
• Strength to crank trailer landing gear (often 100+ lbs) and handle equipment.
• Endurance to remain alert during extended driving and instructional periods.
• Valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and ability to meet CDL physical qualifications.

Specific Tasks & Considerations

• Demonstrate student skills such as coupling/uncoupling trailers and performing inspections.
• Work outdoors under varying weather conditions.
