Job summary

BDO in New York is seeking an Assurance Manager to supervise, direct, and review audit engagements from planning through wrap-up. You will also market and develop the client base within your area of expertise, ensuring engagement profitability including billings and collections.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics required; Master’s in Accountancy preferred.
  • Five or more years of relevant audit experience with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Active licensed US CPA or equivalent; if international, must obtain US CPA within defined timeframe.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise audit team and review workpapers and conclusions onsite during field work.
  • Plan audits and oversee execution with quality, efficiency and timeliness.
  • Advise clients on economic and regulatory risks and GAAP/GAAS application.
  • Draft complex financial statements and footnote disclosures.
  • Identify and communicate improvements to client internal controls.
  • Maintain client relationships and contribute to business development and marketing.

Job Summary

The Assurance Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through the delegation of tasks throughout the planning, field work and “wrap-up” stages of an Audit client engagement. In this role, the Assurance Manager is charged with marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, as well as the responsibility of ensuring engagement profitability involving billings and collections. Traditionally responsibilities of the Assurance Manager will include advising the client on various economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, apply GAAP and GAAS consistently within complex situations, writing technical consultation memos on GAAP / GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing various financial reporting control systems.

GAAP

Applies knowledge and understanding of governing principles; applying these principles to client transactions; and documenting and communicating an understanding and application of these principlesIdentifies and consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncementsMonitors and communicates important professional, industry pronouncementsPresents and discusses alternative generally accepted accounting principles and arguments for/against such alternativesDrafts complex financial statements and related footnote disclosures and effectively communicates these to clientIdentifies complex accounting issues and forms and documents resolution, seeking counsel of BDO technical experts as needed

SEC and PCAOB

Applies knowledge and understanding of SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines, and documents and communicates the application of these principlesReviews SEC filings, including MD&A, financial statements, and disclosures for appropriateness in form, content, completeness, and accuracy, and ensures that quarterly reviews are properly performedReviews required communications to the client and Audit Committee, ensuring their completeness, accuracy, and compliance with Firm and professional guidelinesReviews Section 404 internal control audit work all necessary checklists to ensure their completeness and compliance with Firm and professional guidelinesEnsures compliance with engagement independence requirements and consults internally as needed

GAAS

Applies knowledge and understanding of professional standards; application of the principles contained in professional standards; and the ability to document and communicate an understanding and application of professional standards on an engagementApplies a thorough knowledge of professional standards/practices, including GAAS and PCAOB in performing and supervising workProvides guidance to others and affirms conclusions made by othersCommunicates matters required to be reported to the Audit Committee/Board and those charged with governanceApplies the use of efficiency tools such as statistical sampling, CAATS, etc.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education

Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferredMaster’s degree in Accountancy, preferred

Experience

Five (5) or more years of prior relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, requiredPrior significant supervisory experience, requiredIndustry expertise in one or more assurance specialty, preferred

License/Certifications

Active licensed US CPA, recognized active International Equivalent or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy, required If active international equivalent or unique qualifications, required to obtain an active US CPA license within approved timeframe as defined by firm licensing requirement guidelines
